I'm looking into purchasing a cruising spinnaker for our 36 boat. Catalina.com sells a Doyle with the sock. Does anyone have any experience with the Doyle sail? What other brands would you recommend? Thanks

The best price I've found

is at cruisingdirect.com these are North sails made in limited colors but very reasonably priced. Socks and sheets are also available.

$1200 + $200 for the sock

Had one custom made overseas with US materials and cheap labor, just like the giant successful companys do. Think about it. My local sailmaker (and Doyle) makes a lot of money for work that can be done by unskilled labor overseas. Bet most of your clothing is made there, why not sails? I also had a mainsail and genoa made. Perfect fit, excellent workmanship, 4 week delivery, no sales tax. It doesn't get any better. Can't be you need the name brand, you bought a Catalina! (not that anything is wrong with that)

GREAT Support for HOW (COW?)

I bought a ASM from HunterOwner.com (which is the same as CatalinaOwners.com) and asked bunches of questions prior to purchase. They answered all the questions, and provided a great sail at a great price for my Hunter 320. They have my highest recommendation. Steve S.

Can't beat right here

Dennis, I have purchased two cruising spinnakers from sailboatowners.com One for my Catalina 27, and the second form my Beneteau 361. I have been very happy with both of htem. The price was more than fair and the service terrific. Over the past five years I have purchased a lot of equipment througfh this site and have never been disappointed Good Luck Charlie Gruetzner S/V Angels' Grace

Stay away from Hong Kong sales

Yes they give you a great price, BUT compare the SqFt. it is a third smaller then a regular spinniker.

Check out the used sail vendors

Check locally or nationally for used sails through vendors who specialize in that activity. I was able to find a cruising spinnaker for my 24 foot S2 that was virtually brand new at such a shop in Houston. The spinnaker had been ordered by a boat owner for his 25 foot boat, had taken delivery, tried it once, didn't like it and had returned it to the local sailmaker. The sailmaker offered it for sale through the used sail vendor at 75% of the cost of a new sail. I tried it out, loved it and bought it. Being able to deal locally is best, where you can look at a used sail and see it's condition before buying it. Works for main sails and genoas also.

Went with Doyle

Regarding the comment about going with North since it is a few dollars more ... I got quotes from UK, North, Doyle and others at the Chicago Strictly Sail boat show. For equivalent size sail (~900 sq ft) and a sock (ATN with the Doyle), the Doyle spinnaker was $1000 cheaper. That, to me, is a bit more than just a few dollars. Doyle was actually cheaper than all the quotes. North was, by far, the most expensive. Too bad, as I would have probably gone North if more competitive in the pricing.

Doyle is cheaper

My North cost me about 300 hundred more. I am sure the Doyle is a good sail. I really like working with North. They took into account where I sail and what we wanted to do with the sail! These are the guyes that make all the racing sails. I am sure you got a great sail from Doyle!

That would have made my decision hard!

At a $300 difference, it would have made my decision much harder. But, as I said, it was $1000 difference. I probably could have gotten it cheaper, but I'm not one to negotiate back and forth, back and forth. Give me your best price and then I'll make my decision - Not always going with the lowest price, but going with what I believe to be the best value. Doyle has been quite responsive to my inquiries. They originally gave me three sail designs to choose from. I asked if I could go a different way and they said sure - and at no additional cost. I haven't gotten the sail yet since this just occurred last week, but I can't wait!
