I am thinking of buying a cruising spinaker for my 28.5. Is there any modification that needs to done on the bow to attach the tack? It seems if I attach it to where the headsail currently attaches, the bottom of the sail will be inside the lifelines and not be able to develope full power or fly free.

Block, line and shackle
Scott: It's been several years since we had a cruising spinaker, but........ I think that we had a line with a shackle attached to the tack. We ran the line through a block that was attached at the bow. This was essentially a control line for the sail. Our cruising spinaker had a single hank about 1-2' up from the tack of the sail. The new sails may be configured different so this may need to be modified.

Cruising Spinnaker
I added a CS to my 28.5 a couple of years ago. How I set it up is as follows... 1.I placed a swiveling block attached to the headstay fitting. There is an extra hole for connecting it. 2. I have 2 snatch blocks I place on the slotted toe-rail at either the widest part of the beam or at the aft end of the toe rail. 3. My CS came with a sleve that fits around my furled genoa and allows the CS to ride up/down on the genoa. 4. My CS came with a downhaul which runs thru the block at the tack and I run it back to the cleat at the stern. This controls the height of the CS. 5. I run the sheets outside all of the shrouds, forestay, etc. To use it, I hoist the CS in its sock and run the downhaul back to the cleat. I then raise the sock and trim the sail. I adjust the downhaul so the sail rides about even with the top of the bow pulpit. It really works quite well. Hope this helps.

Same Situation
I have it set up exactly the same way and as such, it clears the pulpit. The sock makes it particularly easy to handle, especially single handed.

The KISS Method
The tack line for my cruising gennaker is attached to a "necklace" on a carobeenor [sp?] with a snap shackle that I just attach to the the tack of the gennaker [outside the bow pulpit]when I deploy the gennaker. The tack line is threaded thru stanchion braces to a block on the toerail just before winch [parallel]. I am able to let gennaker fly as high as I want, or as low outside the pulpit. It works great!
