When is it to late in the season to start heading south on a sailboat?

Too late for what? Nov is the perfect time - consistent wind, no major storms and less traffic. Where are you going?

Heading South

Some time ago, we started out from Annapolis aboard a 42-ft Oyster bound for Tortola. We left Annapolis on Nov 10th and got pounded with high winds, cold and rain from the second day onward all the way to the BVI. From that time on, I would not head south after Novemeber 9th... so you still have a week to leave. :)

If you are going down the east coast, not going off shore to the Caribean, and you have the time to wait out bad weather in port, then you can go as late as you want. You just might get cold waiting in port for the good weather windows.

Conventional wisdom is head south during a good weather window in early November. That way you are supposed to be too late for a hurricane and before the worst of the winter storms hit.

Some years late fall is mild and some years it is brutal. November of '89 it snowed the day before Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving morning the air temps were in the teens. It didn't get back above freezing until January '90. If you decide to leave soon be sure to bring cold weather clothing. The upper Chesapeake can be as cold as Connecticut.

Different

I think you will find ever year the weather is going to be very different and no sure bet what you will get cold, warm, storms.
There is some thing in the Atlantic right now and who knows what it will be,this year no known storms so far but Nov.31 is suppose to end hurricane season.
I sailed Oct 19 last year from Montauk,NY to Fort Pierce ,Fl and the weather was as good as we could have hoped for,we did all off shore and were prepared for cold nasty weather which delayed one day in Montauk.

My friends left last week and are now down in Norfolk, VA... another cruiser I know left a month ago, and is also down in Norfolk... of course, it does depend on what boat you have, as another couple I know will be heading down to Florida in mid-December, but they're trailering their boat and doing 55 mph to windward.
