Having read about the exciting upcoming expedition to map the length of the Amazon, in which the boat will have a bulletproof cabin, and recalling the time I found a bullet hole in my truck after a long night of Interstate driving, I pose the following question.

Have any of you heard of cruisers being shot at? Maybe from shore by someone who didn't like where they anchored? Trying to gauge the risk. Hope it is very minimal.

To clarify: I don't plan to cruise up the Amazon, just normal cruising routes in the US at this point. Thanks.

Peter Blake.

Over our trip down and back on the east coast I only recall one place where there seemed to be "unusual" gun activity. I suspect it was coming from a right wing militia camp in the swamps of SC or GA near the ICW. There was occasional gunfire associated with waterfowl hunting along the way. With that said, at no time did I fear for my safety from the gunfire.

On the other hand, the idiots in power boats were a different story.

Us mere mortals are a little more fearful :yikes: !
I could see the targets and they were shooting inland, not out over the ICW.

Now my ears did fear for their safety after several hours of the Navy Harrier jets practicing overhead. Those suckers are loud as they land and take off even a couple of miles away.

True.

I am wondering where the Navy jets were. Good at least that the right-wing militia weren't shooting over the water, thinking it was 'empty.' That must have been crazy.

For those headed to the Galapagos, FYI, I have seen press reports that Ecuador is much more dangerous than it was previously. Things are always in flux in tbis world so it's best to check in with others from time to time, find out what people have seen.

There are a number of Naval Air Stations and Marine Corps Air Stations along the coast and they all seem to have planes in the air practicing. The Harriers were in NC near Moorehead City.
