My wife and I just got back from 8 days of staying on our 1988 h23 and wanted to let everyone know what a great time we had. We trailered it 300 miles to Lake Winnabago near Oshkosh Wisconsin. The lake is 215 square miles, 28 1/2 miles long and 10 1/2 miles wide with a maximum depth of 21ft. There are many protected harbors with electric hook ups for $10-$12 per night. The people were extremely friendly and helpful giving tips on where to stay, how to negotiate bridges and which resturants were best. The sailing was fabulous, although being a shallow lake, the chop can build quickly. The h23 pounded into the chop like a dream. We logged over 140 miles in our week with the longest single day being 31 miles in 5.5 hours. On another day we went 15 miles in following seas with only the jib up and sustained nearly 7 knots the entire time. WOW what a ride. We stayed on the boat every night and cooked nearly all meals on the boat with either the origa stove or the gas grill I mounted on the transom. While we welcomed the slip in the evening to get off and stetch, it really wasn't all that crowded for two of us. The only down side to the entire trip was the weather. Man, was it cold rainy and cloudy. Winds were great at 10-18 knots most days. The temperature was record lows in the 30's and highs in the upper 50's and rain off and on most days. In spite of the weather we had a wonderful time and look forward to the next trip. Hope this didn't bore everyone, but thought I would report on how the h23 did as a week-long cruising boat. Ward PS.... Anyone wanting more info on this lake let me know warkat@kctc.net

Trailer Sailing

Ward, Your trip sounded great! I have an h26. I would like to do an extended trailer sailing trip in the future. Do you know of any magazines that give information on fresh and salt water areas for trailer sailing, including trailer parks and any other relavant info.? I have lived outside of the U.S. for many years and am currently on the west coast of Mexico. A couple of years from now, my wife and I would like to hitch up our 26 and take a year long tour of the U.S. to reacquaint ourselves with the land of our births. I good guide book would be a start. Any suggestions? David King Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Trailer Sailing Info.

David, There used to be a trailer sailing magazine, but I don't know if it still is in publication. If you knew specific states or areas you were planning on traveling through, I would recommend posting a request in the small boat forum of this website. I can think of no better information source than other people having similiar boats to your own. I am sure you will get lots of help from all the folks here. Good Luck it sounds like an adventure Ward

Resident of Lake Winnebago

Ward, I live 10 minutes from Lake Winnebago. Currently rebuilding the interior of a 1986 H23 - can't wait to sail. Plan to moor at Neenah harbor north of Oshkosh, one of those protected harbors you mentioned. If you ever return, send a note. Be glad to join you for a sail on the north end. CaptCaleb@yahoo.com

Now you've done it...

We were planning our trailor sailing trip for this Summer on our H26. We were trying to decide on Green Bay, Bayport on Lake Superior or Lake Winnegago. I think it will be Winnebago. I agree with you, though, what terrible year for sailing in the midwest. I know that water and boats go together, but come on, enough is enough. Thanks for the report. Tom s/v Chrisanna
