larry next time in gardiner's bay try three mile harbor.it's due south of plum gut with town moorings and nice marinas.try maidstone harbor marina just north of east hampton point.it's quiet w/ pool and restaurant.i'm at slip 124.the mooring field is tricky.on entering dont turn to starboard until nun 20.hail for mooring on 73 or drop anchor in 8-11 ft. try fishers island "west" for one day only, quiet and pretty. watch hill is another great spot just east of stonington.be careful going in,follow the channel closely. point judith has a new beautyful marina on the west bank about 1-2miles north of the entrance.it was a stinky old commercial fish dock but its all redone. happy sailing

L I Sound is chock full

Larry, I keep my Hunter 34 in Milford, there are a number of great spots to go, try Port Jefferson for a nice weekend, the islands in Norwalk offer great views and nice anchorage, or the Connecticut river is always a favorite, tie up in Essex and cruise into town, hit the Griswold Inn for food and good bands, then sneak the boat over to Hamburg cove for a quiet night. Thats the beauty of LI sound, lots of places to go.

New London has an impresive firworks display as well as a boat and art festival. Town moorings are right off city pier. Bill s/v Lady Di

Larry I have an O'Day 25 and also sail out of Branford. I would be interested in an O'Day get together or hooking up for a destination. Paul W

Montaulk, Dering, Coccles?

Larry, I grew up boating on Long Island Sound & now that I'm up in the Boston area, I sorely miss it. The bad news is that you're probably spoiled like I was. The good news is that there are at least a few places you may not have been yet. How about Star Island or Nepauge Bay in Montaulk? Dering Harbor on the north side of Shelter Island? Coccles Harbor on the east side (you pass that to starboard on the way to Sag Harbor)? I've been to every one of the places that the others have suggested & they are all great, too...especially Essex & Hamburg cove if you don't mind motoring up river 6 miles & possibly waiting 20 minutes for a RR bridge that may be lowered for Amtrack. I'd recommend that you enjoy every place you can on The Sound. It's truly one of the best cruising grounds I've ever known. Down East Maine to The Cape to Gloucester are obviously outstanding places to be too, but the season's a little shorter up here, the water's a LOT colder and you're on open ocean a lot of the time. On The Sound you get TONS of natural, deep sheltered harbors that are great places to swim, anchor or moor. You also have a huge selection of good marinas, too. You might want to go to West Marine or BoatUS & pick up a copy of "The Waterway Guide" for the Northeast. They'll list all of the marinas there are + a little bit about the local area, snap shots of charts, dining, facilities & anchorages. I highly recommend it. They update it every year. Enjoy the sound, and if you find yourself at Sag Harbor, have an Olaf ice cream for me, ok? Happy Cruising, Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632
