Cruising Knots per Day

I am negotiating to purchase a 1981 Cherubini Hunter 25. Logistics is the main issue. The owner has suggested we sail the boat from his port to mine, both to transport and as a shakedown cruise. This would be along the Gulf Coast intracoastal waterway. Questions: 1) How many hours a day is it reasonable to be under sail? 2) How many miles per hour would I expect to travel

Motor or Sail?

I have the 81 Hunter 25 also. About 5 knots average under power. This time of year you can get in 14 hours so 70 nautical miles is possible. If you are like me and like to sail about 40-50 nautical miles a day is reasonable. It will be a great way to shake down the boat and I only wish I where going with you.

Where is the Boat Now?

Makes a difference if your going from Lake Pontitrane or from Pascagoula to Bay Waveland. I used to keep my boat in Long Beach when I lived in Biloxi. Anything inbetween those locatians would be a good daysail / shakedown cruise.

anchor for cocktail hour. Figure on 50 nautical miles or about 10 hours a day. Leave at 7:00 AM be at anchor or dock by 5:00 PM. Transiting the ICW after dark is dangerous. If on the open Gulf; you could do 100 NM in 24 hours. This would require a watch schedule for safety. Good luck.

Rick is right

You will get a much better answer if you define your route. The ICW varies from region to region. Is the 25 outboard powered?

More Information

Yes, the boat has an 8HP Mariner OB. We'd depart from Fair Hope, AL, on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. Cross the bay and head for Dauphin Island. Then, head West toward Bay of St Louis, (Bay St. Louis, MS)staying in Mississippi Sound, inside the barrier islands.

I'd Give That Two Days

It is at least 80 miles. I would drive it first as well to check facilities on the way. Dauphin Island I hear is back up and running from there the next place to stop would be Point Cadet but are they open? It is as far into Pascagoula as it is to Biloxi once you leave Dauphin Island if you need to get into a marina for anything. The fact that the previous owner wants to make the trip with you says a great deal for the boat and the owner. I would probably anchor off of Horn Island overnight or maybe Round Island which is right at just about half way but you want to do it soon before it gets hot and the Dear Flies start their stuff.

Just Got Back from a Trip to Panama City

70 miles out Saturday and 70 miles back Sunday. 50 miles sounds like a good number to plan on I am really beat; of course the weather today did not help at all. Another consideration, two is a good crew size on this boat any more than three I believe would be too many.
