Seadaddler, Did you find the wench with

the boat yet? Hope it happens soon for you. Hey, I bought what is called raster nautical charts on a disc on e-bay. It was about $8.00. You can down load any chart on the eastern seaboard, intercoastal waterway. I also bought a Mid Atlantic 2007 waterway guide that covers the Chesapeake down to Georgia. There must be a waterway Guide for your area. I think I got mine for about $25.00. If it is your sailing area, the purchase of charts is a good investment even if you are still waiting on a boat. Your area has some serious sailing going on. Have you inquired about signing on to a real sailboat? I don't know if you saw the the You tube videos but the racing videos are some serious sailing. It is a major commitment but I think it would be a lifetime charge. best to you... r.w.landau

I like the Maptech LI Sound chartbook

It has a ring binder with waterproof (not scratch proof) charts that go into a lot of detail as to where anchorages are and marinas with phone #'s and services in each harbor on both the LI and CT side of the sound. It goes from Throggs Neck out to Block Island. It is a bit spendy at around 50 bucks but I think well worth it if you plan to do more cruising in this area. I bought mine when I took my then new (old - 1967) Tartan 27 from 3 Mile Harbor, East Hampton back to the western Sound. We stopped in for an overnight in Mattituck Inlet which (then) still had a town dock that you could tie up to for free (space permitting). It was quite near the LIRR station and a few blocks from stores and restaurants and was quiet for the most part. I believe that you are on the Peconic Bay if I recall correctly so you could always stop in at Greenport. I have always wanted to cruise through there and around Shelter Island, Jessups Neck, Robins Island etc. A real jewel of a place is Northwest Creek which is near Sagg Harbor but you have to be provisioned as there is nothing there except water fowl, fish and peat lined shores with nature preserves on both sides of the little harbor. The mouth is a bit of a challenge but at high water you and under power or with the right wind direction you should be able to get into the mooring area and anchor overnight. Well protected and really quiet and beautiful. You probably heard about this place as it was where the dolphin pod got stuck or confused or whatever several weeks ago. Do not try to anchor up this creek as it is really shallow and the mooring area is where you need to be near the entrance channel which was dredged sevaral years back. I have taken my 14' centerboard day sailor up this creek and found many a shoal. I have made no stops in on the CT side but would like to explore this area as well. Stonington and Faulkner Island CT come to mind but there are a lot of other places to explore and duck into. I have another cruising guide that I dont like as much as the Maptech chartbook but it gives more written descriptions of each place and covers a wider area and costs around $35 + shipping. It is more of an advertising compendium but does contain some interesting info. http://www.amazon.com/Cruising-Guide-New-England-Coast/dp/0393048586/sr=8-1/qid=1170134659/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-8804646-8163930?ie=UTF8&s=books Better do all this cruising this summer before Broadwater tries to claim the mid Sound their own if it can get past the planning phase.

More Local Info

I do have Maptech Long Island chats,I really want to know more local info like gunkholing ,exploring those secret spots in Ct,I have done some sailing and kayaking on the ny north and south shores. We have been doing most of our cruising in the peconic and around greenport, sag harbor, shelter island,I just retired and will be doing more cruising into long island sound. As we get closer to boating season I'll do more info searching on this forum. I already found my boat babe many years ago,she does have a new boat but does not like cleaning and cooking fish.

Maptech the Best, IMHO

I like the Maptech Books the best. I have the RI/MA, LI and Maine Coast issues (used them all) and have found them to be superlative. They reference the Chart Book pages also. http://mapserver.maptech.com/homepage/index.cfm?BPID=MAP0060030900%2C1%2C1%2C0&CFID=12905391&CFTOKEN=88852201 Paste this link into your browser and you can select the exact chart you are looking for.

Westport, Norwalk Area

I keep my 23 Oday moored in Westport,CT. There is an island right offshore which is nice for overnight anchor, kayaking, relaxing, etc, The Norwalk Islands are also very close but beware with your 5 ft keel at low tide! One island(Sheffield I think) also has a lighthouse that you can visit. Ashore in Norwalk is the Maritime Aquarium and the nightlife/restuarants in downtown is terrific! Cheers _)

New London

I have picked passangers up at the New London dock and there is a parking garage nearby. Alternatively there are lot's of Marinas in the Mystic and Noank area where you could meet them as well. If you want to anchor or pick up a mooring consider West Harbor at Fishers Island or just anchor just off the entrance to West Harbor at Little Hammock.

If you like reading and you've got

the time, there is a book called "The Coast of Summer" by Anthony Bailey (link at bottom). I think it is well written and I enjoyed it because it talked about sailing on a Tartan 27 (which I have) from the Peconics to Block and beyond. He overnighted on the hook a lot being a bit of a cheapskate at places like Fishers and Cuttyhunk Islands. It is a bit outdated as he describes keeping his boat safe in a hurricane hole on the CT side during hurricane Gloria, or was it Bob? His home port was Stonington and he did some gunkholing on that side which he describes as well as the CT River if memory serves. For comparison purposes his boat drew 3'6" with centerboard up and 6' with it down. The link below is for Faulkner Island which is off the coast of Guilford, CT. Not sure if you can overnight here but in an emergency why not? Looks like there is a breakwater and small harbor. Phone # on website should you want to speak to someone who might be able to tell you what their "official" policies are. Now is the time to plan for this summer's big adventures so good luck. It sounds like a blast. http://lighthouse.cc/FLB/

good online info

here's a good online web site to use for LIS http://www.coastalboating.net/Cruising/Destinations/indexDestinations.html

Used the Maptech as it provides

charts, information on marinas, anchorages, restaurants and general points of interest. We also had a waypoints book for the sound. It proved invaluable in negotiating the waterways around Shelter Island.

Seadaddler, I did not know you owned a boat

before. I also did not know you recently retired. I pictured you as a twentysomething that had tasted sailing and was trying to get back in. Your reply to a post always had that.... drive to it...a driven can't wait... I am glad you have had your boat babe all these years. Some of your comments have been miss, leading like looking for a....."send pictures of he boat and motor" It makes me laugh harder now. Congradulations on the new boat! I hope your plan for this summer works out! r.w.landau

Short Boatless

I was boat less for a few month's when I traded in my 290 but the new boat is in and still can't wait. My boat babe (wife) got me this wooden board with this saying on it many years ago and every time I see hanging on the wall start cracking up so I thought I'd add that as a joke. But my boat babe said you hit the nail on the head twenty something, all the kids are gone so I fill in and keep her very active.

I Read it, too

I read The Coast of Summer a few years ago, too. It was a nice read about a sailor who sailed his boat (with an A4) by compass and time. It's a great winter-read or if you are holed-up somewhere out of the weather.

thanks for the link. Quite informative and interesting. Paul, On the strength of "The coast of summer" I decided to read his other book about boating: "The Thousand Dollar Yacht", which was fun too, but a lot less sailing distance covered.
