I have friends that made the trip to Florida every year from the upper chesapeake. Most years the trip was uneventful but one notable year they left a bit late and spent three weeks getting to Hampton, Va. they were sitting out very nasty weather. Be certain that you provision for long delays between stops to replenish.

Yes Ed, I agree with you in a 100%. Thanks to weather, I know it will be a long trip. Part of my plan is to sail inside and outside, again, weather will have the last word on my plans.

I just added the waterproof boots to my long wish list!

Yes, my boat holds about 20 gallons of fuel.

Your comments about the fuel stops getting rare are well noted.

That's exactly the plan! I first need to get familiar with the boat.

Thanks Ross!

That's exactly what I am afraid of.....to spent more money sailing the boat down to FL instead of trucking her down....big puzzle right now!

Re: Weather

Hi Nick.

In those pictures weather looks pretty nice.

My plan is to sail offshore as muh as possible and only use the ICW to rest, top off all tanks, etc.

Cost will have the last word.

Yes, sailing outside for the most part of the trip (weather permittng) is the plan.

I will be moe than glad to give you a ride to HH. I have been there a few times and love the place, considering I do not play golf at all!

I will rather go outside but many factors will play an important role on my final decision, sail inside o routside. Let's see!

Planning mostly luck

On my trip the weather started out not so good with yes at the Marina very nice but on way to montauk the wind built to about 30 and had to delay one whole day until the wind died down, started out very cool for sure.
You never know what the weather will be from year to year, for the most part things were good most of the trip with one or two sqaulls along the way, from Montauk to below NJ was the worst waves and wind.
Weather will be the deciding factor if going inside or outside,my plan was all offshore until the auto and weather reporting stopped working so we ducked in at Cape hatteress inlet ( very bad inlet )to try repairs but no good no auto or weather radio so out again at Moorehead City( very good) offshore to Ft Pierce.
Yes a lot of planning and spare parts for engine, froozen food and canned and boxed foods, energy bars, fresh fruit, lots of drinking water,35 gal fuel in tank and 30 gal of fuel in jugs, extra fuel filters, offshore life raft, ditch bag, extra flash lights,on and on.
We were 100 miles offshore at times so we were much more prepared for any emergency, first aid kits, sea sick pills, our plan was from NY straight to Bahama's and than to Florida.
I had all the charts cruising books,3 handheld GPS and Raymarine C-80 and radar, had Sirius weather radio stopped working do to bad cable, now working but have not done offshore trips yet.
In Jan I sailed down around Keys and up to Punta Gorda, everything was great and good weather until last 1/2 day,you do want to make sure your boat is good to make along trip with lots of motoring and sailing

ODay 35 Beaufort, NC
Options

The average daytime high temperature in November in NC is 65 and the nightime is 41, it will be night more than 50% of each day, so you will need to stay warm even in the south.
The area between Mile marker zero and Oriental is pretty remote with a small marina (River Forrest) in Bellhaven with repair capability. You can also dock up in Coinjock.
Going up Delaware Bay to the C&D and back down the Chesepeake adds an awful long distance to the trip. When I came down from Ct. I went outside all the way to the Chesepeake and came in the south channel of the bridge tunnel. From Mystic Ct it took about 3.5 days. We had a pretty good storm and surfed waves most of the way. Also there is a southward current as a result of the eddies off the gulf stream that flows along that stretch to help you out. You can see this in a copy of Bowditch. So a nice 3.5 day offshore sail, maybe spend a night in Norfolk at a marina, then down the remote stretches of the ICW (look for bald eagles and osprey) spend a night in coinjock, spend another night at the end of the alligator river, then a night in Bellhaven, next night in Oriental, next in Beaufort/Morehead City.
Haven't been further south of there yet so I'll let others guide you. Go slow and watch the buoys closely when you come out of Adams Creek and go to Morehead City. It can be very confusing, get your binoculars out and don't take chances. One channel turns into three with one going to the Beaufort drawbridge, the other two going to Morehead. Very easy to get confused and go aground.

Re: Options

The C&D canal is there to shorten the trip from Baltimore to Philadelphia. The trip from Cape May to Cape Henry is pretty much a straight run.

$$$$$ to Florida

The price was very high to ship my 2007 Hunter-36 to Florida and so I had a friend who had done this and many other sailing trips all his life sailing help me plan and make the trip.
I also felt I would learn alot with this long offshore sailing.
