H31 Assymetrical spinnaker dimensions

Assuming that your boat has the same rig dimensions as mine ((I=43.7'; J=12'; P=37'; E=11') the following dimensions will allow the tack of the chute to be above the pulpit, and therefore avoid chafe from the furling drum and provide decent forward visibility: Luff length - 42.5 Leech length - 37 Foot - 20.4 Luff and leech lengths of 43.85 and 38.15, respectively, can be accomodated with your rig if you don't care about the chafe and visibility issues. These dimensions would increase your performance while reaching. Good luck - Rick

Rick J Did you run your spinnaker halyard in the mast or did you rig an external halyard. How did you secure the block at the top of the mast? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have not been to the top of my mast. I am trying to save an extra trip up.

Luff=I ?

does the luff need to be the same as the I or can this vary?

Your akite luff can easily be longer than the headstay. Even an extra 3' above the headstay length(45.3) will work fine. Don't forget that the luff of the akite is a big curve unlike the jib/genoa which is dead straight and you almost never set the tack of the akite on the deck. It will usually fly well above deck level and project well forward.

Hey Mike...

I've been out of town for a while, but to answer your question, my boat was already rigged with a spinnaker halliard in the mast. I just went to the asymmetrical chute for easier (lazier) sailing with my drunk friends. Anyway, if you are interested in rigging options with a lot of cool hints and details, there was a recent, detailed discussion in this forum regarding precisely this issue, and you should be able to go into the archives and get all the answers you want. Good luck, have fun! - Rick J

OOps!

My reply was actually for Steve, which is embarrassing enough, but when I checked the archives, the discussions regarding asymmetrical spinnaker rigging had a Mike and a Steve, so my suggestion to look in the archives might be less than helpful if that was you, Mike. Or you, Steve. But, anyway, the post I was specifically referring to in the archives was the reply by Alan, on 12/28/2004 (along with other helpful replys), to 'Dummy's Guide to Asymmetrical Cruising Spinnaker,' which, collectively, include a lot of good information provided by guys that (as opposed to me) seem to actually know what they're talking about. Later - RJ
