I've just bought a 1973 O'Day 22 for $10. Plenty of work, but I'm excited. Can anyone suggest modifications to make this boat a comfortable cruiser? I have plans to live aboard, eventually... Does anyone have any experience installing a "permanent" head? How far have folks gone in this boat? Thanks, dreadeye@party4peace.com

Live aboard!?!?

Live aboard a 22 foot boat? Not exactly a creature-comfort kind of guy, eh? I suppose it can be done, but it would be the equivalent of camping out permanently. I have an O'Day 23, and I guess I could install more batteries, increase the water carrying capacity and install a permanent head. However, nothing is going to make either my boat or your boat anything more than a coastal cruiser; they simply do not have the weight, fittings, rigging or scantlings to stand up to the ocean. That being said, I guess if you spent only $10 for the boat, you probably have some money left over to fix her up. Good luck.

Dread - Obviously, you are aware of the space limitations, but there is no reason you couldn't live aboard. I share Mike's concern with the seaworthiness if you plan to do any serious voyaging, though. Check out the Headmistress archives for information on your head installation.
