Cruising Again

A large Hunter pulled into Mayo’s just before sunset. I took their lines and they told me they were going to try and do 80 miles the next day to Coinjock as he had to go back to work. I was woken by the prop sound of a boat going by at 4:30 and looked out to see a Hunter. When I looked down the dock at dawn, the first Hunter was still there but left as I was having breakfast. There are now two boats ahead of me that I know of.

Now that I’ve lost my chance to get the “First Boat North” tee shirt, I figured I’d do a little cruising. This decision was made easier by the thought of being tied up the free docks in Washington for the very potent looking thunderstorms on the radar and in the forecasts.

I spent the time running down the Goose Creek getting my autopilot readjusted. It’s a hybrid in which a tiller pilot tweaks the wind vane linkage and it takes quite a bit of tweaking of the lines on initial assembly (or re-assembly in this case) to get it so it doesn’t hunt and has equal turning ability in both directions. That done, I hoisted sail, set the wind vane, and headed off on a reach up the Pamlico.

The fetch was sufficient to create enough of a sea that standing at the mast coiling down with the boat moving under me brought back memories of the sea that seem as distant now as If I’d spent the past three months in Arizona. Heading towards a new place after weeks of retracing the waterway made it a wonderful moment even under overcast skies.

It was just a tease though. Not half an hour after I got the sails up, the wind died. It was still a long and pleasant power run up to the Washington, NC. I passed the potash mine and processing plants at Aurora, the largest combined mine and processing facility in the world. The scale of the facility is amazing to see and Google Earth reveals it to be the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

I anchored briefly in Washington to get organized for docking and then tied up for dinner. No well stocked stores in walking distance but I was able to buy coffee at a gourmet shop so I’m good. I’ve had dinner and breakfast ashore and am waiting out the huge line of thunderstorms that seem to be fizzling.

I’m going to check out the NC Estuarium museum Shoaldrafter mentioned and then assess. Steady rain is predicted for tomorrow but with wind in the right direction. I may put on the foul weather gear and see how far I can get. It’s going to get much colder the next day and the wind will be turning against me. I want to get positioned for the long run up to Coinjock.

If you get a chance ask one of the townsfolk about Bill's hotdogs. They come any way you want them as long as it's chili,mustard and onions, but the shop is an easy walk from the Little Washington waterfront.

I looked at
http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/Conus/southeast_loop.php
at 4:10 p.m., saturday. What that is not showing is the clouds still over Greenville, SC -- not Washingtion, NC's neighbor, Greenville, NC.

Still clouds here. But not very low and no rain or thunderstorms. And the front appear to be moving east so you be go in a.m. there. But I am not a weatherman... as if they are more than 50% right.

Bellhave has marinas, but they are pricey. The one by the breakwater worked for me in a thunderstorm...

Just before you get into the cut, I saw a wide bend in the river with a big ketch anchored so there must be suffient depth and room. He was facing the weather.

Rodger,

I left Palm Coast, Fl. last Sat afternoon (2/25).
Trying to catch up with you, and having only occasional internet to see your 'spot" progress, I tied up at Hobucken (the far South end of the pier) on Thurs night (3/1) about 20:00. We got underway the next morning, yesterday (Fri, 3/2) at 06:00 and cruised to Coinjock, arriving there at 18:30.
Was Thus the night you were referring to when you mentioned the Hunters? ... I looked for you, but didn't see you or another Hunter at Mayo's (Hobucken), and did not see another Hunter in Coinjock.
It was, however, dark when we tied up at Hobucken and I might have missed you :(

Unbelievable. You did. I was at the far north end of the pier. The bugs were so thick that, after I closed the companionway, I didn't dare look out even to see the sight of all five planets in the sky at the same time. You were the boat I saw go by just before dawn.

I'm amazed you were able to get the boat secured that time of night without getting sucked dry.

That other boat was tied up about the middle. It might have been a Beneatau. I couldn't see that clearly through the mosquitoes.

Unbelievable too how fast you cover the ground.

I should see you in the Chesapeake before long.

It must be nice to make that distance in 12 hours. Must be more than one helmsman aboard. And must have had some favorable wind and tide on Albemarle Sound.

Maybe Roger will take the scenic route? The great dismal canal?

I see the 420 has 6 foot draft. Humm. Once you get to the North Landing River you will be fine. Now the only real obstacle is that draw bridge on the Elizabeth River that only opens on the hour. All the other bridges just slow you down a little.

Mosquitoes this time of year? Must be snow birds.

DARN IT ! !

I thought you might go to Hobucken, but when we tied up (in the dark) and the mosquitoes attacked within milliseconds (by the thousands), we, too, got back inside REAL QUICK and spent the next half hour swatting the ones that had already gotten inside.
I was so busy at 06:00 the next morning getting things going in the dark that I didn't even look at the pier as we went by.
I'm so sorry I missed you :cry:

After the run to Coinjock on Fri, (BAD mosquitoes there, also) we left there in thunderstorms Sat AM (06:00) and ... after crossing the Currituck S. in heavy rain... made it thru all of the bridges with the good fortune of following a big tug pushing a barge ( I barely squeezed into the Great Bridge Lock with him), and made it to Little Creek at 15:30 yesterday.
To add final insult to a tough run home ( we had to stay inside the first 3 days in N Fl. and Ga. because of the same weather system that rained out the Datona 500) ... we were boarded by the Coast Guard as we came into Little Creek for a "Safety Inspection" ... even though we had had one last Summer.
The young Coast Guardsman even admitted that they had a "quota" of inspections ... and there aren't many boats out this time of the year :)

When you get up to Hampton Roads, I'll be looking forward to seeing you and to helping you in any way ... ie. car to grocery store, etc.
Have a great cruise North :) ... hope the Mosquitoes get stunned a little by the "cooler" weather over the next few days ;)

INDEED ...

Eastern NC was one of the few places coming up the coast that we couldn't get 3G (or 4G), and thus no SPOT on Thus. of where Rodger was.
I knew he had gotten to Beaufort, and figured he'd either stay in Beaufort for a day or two, or go to either Oriental, or Hobucken.
I looked for his boat as we approached the Hobucken "docks" that night... but darkness, fatigue, and mosquitos were bad and conspired against my "spotting" him.
(No pun intended :)).

Endeavour/Chrysler E-32/C-22 swimming pool
We are also heading north at this time but have only made it to Ft.Pierce Fl a week after leaving Miami. I have replaced the lower shrouds on our E-32 and what a differance. We went out in Ft.Lauderdale came in WPM then back out to come in St.Lucie. Its been cold even here, I can't imagine what it must be in NC.
