A couple buddies and myself are taking off for a 4 month sailing cruise around the caribbean and are currently shopping for a boat. The 3 of us have never cruised before and have no way of knowing if a 2 cabin boat would suffice or drive us mad. I'm hoping to get advice from experienced cruisers who could provide valuable insight. At this time we've got about $100,000 to spend and are finding nice 37' mid 90's, 2 cabin production boats such as the Hunter 375. On the other hand we're finding larger (40'), yet perviously chartered, mid 90's 3 cabin production boats such as the Beneteau 400/405. This poses two questions: 1) Is it reasonable to believe that three guys (who have roomed together for some time) could fare well on a 2 cabin boat for 4 months. And, 2) Is it worth the sacrifice to buy a smaller boat, knowing it hasn't been abused in charter and would possibly hold a better resale value. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!!! Rob

You would probably be fine with a 2 cabin model but that's a really personal question for strangers to answer. If you get along well now, you'd probably be fine. If you all need your "space" then maybe not. As for question #2, another difficult question for "us" to answer. It might be worth it to me but not to the next person. LaDonna

3 guys ?

Four months is a long time. I presume you will be stopping at numerous ports. Will you be bringing guests aboard? Will you need some extra privacy now and then?

Definitely three cabins

Conventional wisdom says each crew member should have their own private space (no matter how small) for the sake of psychological comfort. If the possibility of female companionship on board even remotely exists, then this becomes critical. The toughest thing will be deciding who gets the master cabin and who has to share the remaining head! Peter H23 "Raven"
