Has anyone ever either started or belonged to a cruisers club? What I mean is, a group of sailors that just daysail and cruise together, no racing. There is nothing wrong with racing, but I "race" enough during the week at work! It's been my experience with most sailing/yacht clubs are centered around racing. When they do host a cruise the "racers" group together and the non-racers seem to be left out. Don't get me wrong, I think it is important to participate in your club's activities, but when it comes to race day I would rather be out on my boat than cheering on the same racers that shun the non-racers on the cruises. Thanks, Bob

The Central Florida Yacht Club is pretty much a cruiser club of trailer sailors, with a couple of races a year. check out www.cfyc.com

We're a cruising club

The Squalicum Yacht Club in Bellingham, WA is a cruising club. It was formed in 1937 and has been cruising the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound for a long time. We own our own club house which is a World War II officers mess so our membership is limited to about sixty members--we run out of chairs after that. The best part is that all summer long there are weekend cruises, short cruises, long cruises, expensive cruises and cheap ones. Sometimes we go to a marina and sometimes we anchor and raft. This is family for me. We take care of each other and have a good time. I suspect there are a lot of yacht clubs that just cruise. But I also know there are many yacht clubs that are primarily social in nature. "It's the best club in town for the best type of people" sort of thing. My thoughts are that I can't afford the latter types.

The KWSC is a pretty rag-tag group of sailors... We have an active group of cruisers, and the club sponsors a few mini-cruises every year. Sometimes there are large groups, but usually it's just 3-5 boats. The racers in our club are also active, but I haven't seen them 'shun' the active cruisers-- Partly because many of them are the same people! They're pretty good at turning the 'competitive mode' switch to the 'off' position. --Jon

Organizing one right now!

Hi Bob: I am in the middle of forming the Maine Hunter Sailing Association and our focus will be on cruising instead of racing. We are sponsoring a Rendezvous and flotilla this summer. Check out our web site: http://fairwinds.homestead.com

Strictly cruising.

Not really a club, just our marina organizing weekend and one week outings. They reserve several slips or moorings at various locations. Had a really nice time at one of the Lake Erie Islands last summer. They have organized a weekend in March at a resort with meals, speakers, and vendors. Kind of a mini-boat show just for their marina members. It's funny because there is a club mentioned on the marina website but the registration has never worked, see Link.
