I'm a lake sailor ready to move to the coast (Charleston SC). What is the best tool for trip/route planning? Is there a "AAA" type source for cruise planning? I haven't investigated either chart books or software (Cap'n, etc.) and would think someone has come up with a preprogrammed list of waypoints for various trips. Also would be interested in looking at routes others had taken with an idea of how long each leg would be. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Try the Guide to Cruising the Chesapeake Bay www.cbmmag.net or phone 877-804-8624. You may want to check at the nearest boat store to see what they might have on the shelf. Good luck.

Mid-Atlantic Waterway Guide

I have the 1998 version but will upgrade to the 2005 version before leaving Lake Erie next May. It is almost 400 pages and covers the north end of the Chesapeake(including the C&D canal) all the way to Florida. Chock full of marina and anchoring tips, restaurants, points of interest, etc. Actual chart numbers are referenced and segments included where necessary. Will still have the GPS attached to the PC and "The Cap'n".
