This year we cruised a week on Kentucky Lake - had a great time - good sailing, good weather and good friends. :)

Now we're looking for 2009.

Has any one been to the north shore of Lake Huron? I've heard it's breathtaking. If so -

Where would you put in (assuming you're pulling your Hunter) - Michigan? Canada?
In Michigan - I'm looking at Cheboygan - opinions?

I'm considering (assuming a starting point at Cheboygan) sailing to Mackinac Island - and then North East to Canada. Again - opinions?

Timing - I'm looking at mid to late July. Too late? Too early?

Can a H-26 water ballast handle this cruise?

I appreciate any and all ideas and opinions.

How about Door County Wisconsin/Green Bay?

Hi Tom,

We've trailered our H240 to the Grand Traverse Bay area a few times. Northern Michigan is gorgeous. I've never been as far north as Mackinac but am hoping to make this cruise the next time I'm up north.

Have you considered trailering up to Door County Wisconsin? From what I hear this is also a great sailing area. This would probably be a little easier for you to get to from Carlyle than the far side of Lake Michigan. I've got sisters in the St. Louis area so I've camped out at Carlyle a few times and you are a LONG ways from anywhere. Also I've seen some great reviews for the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior.

North Channel

This area is indeed one of the best cruising in the world. Google north channel and it should give you much info. Another resource site is; Trailor/Sailor's association. They group sail this area yearly and their newsletter describe anchorages etc.

PS. If you haqve a H260 George's site might help

and I highly reccomend the Ports Cruising guide for Lake Huron and the North Channel. It will save you tons of time in finding anchorages, and services.

Tom:

Suggest you take next year's cruise with the Trailer Sailer Assn which visits the North Channel each year about the 15th of July.

Here's the link: http://www.trailersailors.org/

Of course, I don't mind you looking at the pictures of my trips to the North Channel in

2006: http://kobernus.com/nc06/

2004: http://kobernus.com/nc04/

We usually go just for a week but many trailer sailors spend a month or more.

We usually go just for a week but many trailer sailors spend a month or more. Boats come mainly from Canada and Midwest but we had one boat from Tennessee and another from Oklahoma this year.
