I went out on a limb this week with an ebay purchase. I've been searching ebay for some random parts and decided to search "O'day 35" just to see what came up. To my surprise, a couple of vintage slides of "Judy O'day nude on the couch" came up, along with a "Made as extra jib but never used" working jib. Asking price, $475. I've been looking for a new headsail for a few years and decided last fall to buy a sewing machine and 130% headsail kit from Sailrite and make it myself over the winter. Well, I got as far as buying the machine last fall, but winter got busy and I never got around to it. Our current 150% is really old, possibly original circa 1985. I offered $400 and got the sail. It's in transit, set to arrive next week. I realize, it's smaller than what I want in the 130%, but it will help round out the sail inventory once I get around to making the kit. I won't be able to raise it for a couple of weeks once the boat goes back in the water May 9th. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Here's a link to the ebay site and images of the sail. So, I just got my new to me, ebay sail and it's as good as I had hoped. The sail must never have been used and if it had, it was minimal. Sometimes things just have a way of working out. I'm really excited to have this sail as part of our inventory, but I have a question... What is the grommet for at the head of the sail as seen in the photo?

I think you have a 100% jib there. The extra wore rope attaches to the halyard because the sail is shorter than the forestay.

4father how can you determine the % by looking at the attached wire rope on the head of the sail? Percent size is determined by foot length as far as I know. Chief

4father, I know what the pendant is for, I was referring to the grommet in the head of the sail.
Just an update about the sail, it is, in fact, a 100% made specifically for an O'day 35. It is written directly on the sail under the sailmakers patch. It replaced my terribly blown out 150% and I absolutely love it. The boat is far more balanced and still sails very well. We've had some pretty decent wind this spring and the boat is far more comfortable and stands up much better. Even in lighter air, the sail shape is so much better that it still sails as well as with the 150%. What a lucky find!

Chief, you're right that I can't tell the size of the jib by the wire rope at the head of the sail. I only made my comment because it looks just like my 100% jib. My genoa, on the other hand, fills the entire headstay and doesn't use a halyard extension. I'm not guaranteeing that the photo shows a 100% jib, I just think it's likely.

I responded originally from my smartphone and didn't get a good look at the grommet and missed the original point of the question.

I don't know what the purpose of the grommet is. I can't see it being used for downhaul. I'd think the halyard would be a simpler and more reliable attachment point.

I'm curious to see if anyone has an answer!
