Crooked Pop Top

I have a 1988 C22 that I picked up from Utah last year. Among other things the pop top when raised misses the mast opening by quite a bit. I see no loose fittings and nothing seems amiss. As you can see in the photo it misses to port side by a good 4". Any ideas of what may be the issue and a fix?
Thanks

Ours often misses the mark as well, although not by that much. How much does it resist being pushed to starboard until it goes in place?

Mine is off a bit as well, probably more like how gene is describing. However, it's pretty easy to line it up. There's a pop top assist kit you can get that would probably make it easy but I haven't ever gotten around to actually installing mine. It's on the list. Hopefully you get it sorted out.

Well, I believe that I see something amiss. Now, it could be just the way you held your camera but when I magnify your picture, it appears that your mast step is not in line with the center line of the boat. I believe that the rear of the step is biased a bit to starboard and the front is pointing a bit to port. Next time you're at the boat, I would verify that the mast is plumb and square.

It's not a complicated fix but it will require the mast to come down and I can tell you from experience that the bolts that hold the plate to the compression post are a bear to access in the space available. FWIW, my compression post (inside the cabin) was shifted forward by almost an inch when I bought Waffle House. So while tending to that, I also went ahead and installed a halyard plate and a newer style mast step while I was at it. Let us know what you decide to do. I hope this helps.

I agree looking at the imprint in the factory non skid the base plate for the mast is at least an inch or two to starboard of where it should be. Need to reinstall the base plate as the mast out of line throws all of the stays out of proper alignment.
