I'm a new sailor and want to know if there is a formula for estimating how much crew weight my 23.5 can reasonabily carry. The formula the sail instructor gave out equated to about 10 people on board.
I have carried ten and it is cramped for sailing but OK in a pinch. Two to Five is good for racing and up to six is comfortable for daysailing. For cruising two or three is about right, but we squeeze on five by using space and storage wisely for weekend trips.Frank
I think that formula is figured on people weighing 150 pounds...so you should adjust accordingly. We won't carry more than 6 total on our Hunter 26.Carol
Alex,The ASA book of "Sailing Fundamentals" gives the following crew capacity formula for a boat:multiply the length (in feet) by the width (in feet) and divide this by 15. Round down to the nearest whole number. This formula assumes the average weight of a person is 150 pounds and it's a calm day. My husband and I have 2 small children and are considering asking another family along for a sail. I guess common sense rules.
I must have done something wrong in calculating for my 356. 35x12/15 = 28 people!! How many people were on that boat that turned over in San Diego Bay a few months ago?Let's see...if I can get about 24 of them on the rail at 150 lbs each...Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)
Sure, you could put 22 people on a 33' boat! Figuring each person is 2' wide, you can put at least 12 along the windward rail, put 6 in the cockpit and the rest will be down below waiting in line to use the head!BTW: Don't forget to factor in the weight of the beer, chips, ice, etc that you'll need for each person.Oh, and how many people have 22 PFDs available on their boat?
On our H22 the cockpit isn't really any smaller in length than on the 23.5, and I can't see sailing with any more than 6 adults on the boat. Any more than than and people are just falling over each other. Maybe I'm just too used to sailing solo!dlg
