My white rub rail has some creosote on it from a piling. Lacquer thinner has removed most of it but there is still a brown stain. Has anyone found a cure for this problem.
thanks

Have you tried WD40? It may turn out to be a better solvent than lacquer thinner.

spray vinyl

If you just can't live with the mark. Then you may want try try spray vinyl in a can.Make sure that it is elastomeric in nature.Because that is more like a dye.It will not skin, but actually dye into the rub rail.most automotive paint stores sell it.But lots of stores like walmart and lowes sell stuff along those lines. At the automotive you can purchase the adhesion promoter. That really helps. But if it is not possible just soften it up with lacquer thinner.Mask and spray. If the rubrail is rubber then you may not want to try this product. But it sticks to just about all types of plastics,pvcs,urethanes,etc......

To help

rid your rub rail of creosote, have you tried diesel fuel? It might help, then all you have to do is get rid of the diesel fuel. I would be very careful with organic solvents like MEK, MIBK, acetone, benzene, as they will disolve the rub rail material easily and quickly. They will also do a job on the gel coat or glass.

If you are really worried about it, did you think of getting some of the white shoe liquid polish that they used to use for nurses shoes? Or, what about some KILZ oil based primer. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it that much, but I can understand you wanting to get rid of it. Good luck, Tom

Re: To help

The problem with creosote is its complexity. Vinyl can be dyed very successfully and if you fractionated creosote you would find many dyes in its make up. If the color penetrates the surface the best you can do is shrug your shoulders and say the rub rail did its job.
