Crazy idea?

Several days ago I received an email from a friend who said he had redone the non-slip areas of his deck with truck bed-liner material - the kind you spray or brush on. The idea struck me as either brilliantly innovative or idiotic. Try as I may, I can't think of why this wouldn't work, but have the nagging feeling that there's a gremlin lurking in the works somewhere. Anyone tried it?

Water Trap?

Bob, Might might not, it's a plastic material? You don't want water trapped under anything, that is clear. Sand in the paint has been an old stand-in for centurys, but I prefer walnut shells, West Marine use to sell ground up W.shells back when they were a chandlery...;-) There are some pretty good roll-ons that look good and work well too.

It works great =

This product has been around for a number of years. Check out their product applications for recreational boats - non skid.

I looked into it

And all the spray in liners I looked at were slick in my street shoes. Doesn't sound like much, but I sometimes work in steel 12 stories up or better, so when I buy shoes, I always clear off a steel shelf, and see how well my shoes grip it, if I can't make them slip by impersonating Chubby checker and his twist, I'll buy them, my street shoes grip as well as gym shoes. I've looked into Rhino liner, and a couple others up here, one salesman said they could improve the grip using crushed walnut shells, but I figured if I'm going to sprinkle nonskid, I may as well use a paint base. ken.

yes, that's it

There are several products out there that are similar - I was just wondering if anyone has tried it on a sailboat deck. I'm sure it would seal as well as anything else if the surface is properly prepared. After all, it is sprayed on truck beds and water ingression there would cause major warrantee problems. The applications (trucks) I have seen looked good and had a higher friction aspect than most boat non-skid you see - you wouldn't want your bare skin sliding across it too far. And it does come in various colors.

Different Formulations

Bob, If you carefully read their product listings, you will find that the formula used for truck bed liners etc is quite a tough texture. The product they make for marine applications (swimming pool decks, sail and power boat decks) is a lot softer, and completely non skid. This is not a spray on product.

A thought...

could it be too strong? A sailboat will flex a bit. I think that truck stuff is very strong and inflexible. Might it cause the stuff to break off in chunks? I have no idea. Looks like you need to try it and let us know! Good Luck! -Rob

Glow in the Dark??

Hmm, RhinoHide Ice Blue Glow. Glows in the dark, makes for getting around the deck that much easier on those overnight sails?? Don't think I could go with the Green Glow or the Safety Yellow or Safety Orange! :)

Why not?

You Wisconsin guys have your decks covered with snow most of the time anyway, don't you?

Had fun in the 60s did you?

An entertaining idea, but it may cause flashbacks and other 60s related stuff. How does this feel underfoot after being out in the sun all day?

That was one concern...

But I learned that it comes in a number of colors, including white. And there are several companies that sell or apply it, not just the one referenced here.

I have it

in my pickup bed.It is definately durable and non-skid. I wouldn't want to walk on it much barefooted or neal on it in shorts. It's like super rough sandpaper. The application process was also pretty complicated because everything has to be masked off really well, including nearby boats cars docks etc. This stuff dries almost instantly on contact so any over spray is permanant. In the case of my truck, they put it in a dedicated, sealed spray room and the guy applying it wore a hazardous waste type moon suit with positive air resperator. Pretty innovative idea though. Durabak

after reading great reviews I got a gallon of Beige Durabak UV. But then I bought a new boat ;-). I've got the paint and the rollers required to apply it. If anyone local wants it (bevelry MA) you can have it for $25 if you pick it up (retails for $120). If you want it shipped - you'll have to arrange shipping..... mike.merriman@comcast.net

Thats what Im planing on doing.

The best material is Line X. I think it is better than Rhino Liner. The Rhino Liner is to smoth and slippery. I plan on useing it on my cabin top. I ashure you it will hold up. You can also get it in colors now. I think I will use tanbark. Chris/ Newbee !!!!
