My 356 is now in its second season. I have noticed the two hayches are showing a lot of what I will call crazing. Under certain lighting conditions they are no longer clear. Had my last boat for 18 years other than the anodize wearing off the frame the glass was clear as can be. I have used nothing on these hatches other than boat soap Anyone else having this problem?

Old Hatches

My old boat was an Allmand 31 built in 1982. I bought it used in 84 and traded it in in 2002 when I bought my new 356. The old hatches were Lewmar with a black anodized metal frame. The plexiglas or whatever the material was had only recently started to develop some very minimum crazing, a lot less than my two season old 356. I have no idea what the material was.

Lewmar Warranty

BTW, Lewmar has a warranty that is longer than Hunter's, and it covers crazing. Give them a call or E-mail, and see if it is still covered. It goes for 3 years. Steve

Crazing

My 2003 came in with minor scratches on the hatches. The dealer will be down this week to buff them out with a product called Finesse. Said they should look brand new when he is done. Will let you know how we made out. Marc P

Hatch issues

Lewmar has a large facility in Guilford Ct. Finese-it is made by 3M and is availble in most Autoparts stores. The crazing is typically caused by a chemical reaction. Many window cleaning products have been known to caus this situation. I believe that products such as Windex would ulimately attack the plastic. I hope this helps.

Finesse It

Finesse can be bought at most auto paint stores to use after waxing. In fact, a good mix is 1/2 wax and 1/2 finesse. You'll see it in combo in some W. Marine products as well. Have not tried it on Lexan

internal to plastic

If they are like mine, the craze is internal to the hatch and there is nothing that you can do except replace. I replaced mine several years ago, and they are starting to craze again.

Probably the soap

I found out the hard way that some "boat soaps" extract certain chemicals from the plastic, which results in crazing. Simple Green is one of them ... Crystal Wash is another. The fellow that developed the Island Girl products comfirmed this to me. My boat dealer said the ONLY thing they use is Ivory Dishwashing Liquid for that very reason. Try a test yourself with a 50 percent concentration of whatever you're now using. Let it set a couple of minutes on a small area. If it's the culprit, you'll see heavy crazing within a couple of days. That's what I found.
