Well as luck would have it, Mother Nature has dealt the midwest more than our share of rain. I sail an inland lake an hour east of Saint Louis Missouri. In central Illinois is Lake Caryle. It is a beautiful Corp of Engineers area. Hundreds of campsites surround the lake with a number of well kept ramps and harbors to choose from. Sail boats out number the power boaters 4 to 1 which is great! Breezes are normally 10-20 knots. Sounds nice doesn't it. Well the normal summer pool of about 24,500 acres has risen within the last two weeks to more than 49,000 acres. WOW what a mess! Most of our campgrounds, beaches, boat ramps, toilets & showers are under water. Many of us that rent boat docks at the local marina's find our facilities partially submerged. The docks are afloat but we will need a boat to get to our boat dock this weekend and several to come. Now I have some idea what sailors may go through that utilize moorings. Given time things will return to normal but for now a little rain won't keep this sailor from his boat. Armed with Hip-Waders and a John boat I'm determined to enjoy my weekend damn it. Good Luck to all the other frustrated midwest sailors. Jeff s/v "Festivity" H26 1996

Be Careful!

We'd hate for you to sail over one of those submerged toilets or anything else that's not usually underwater! Hope you have a great weekend of sailing! Hope the water recedes for you soon!

Did you ever learn to share?

Our "lake" of 200 miles lenghtis down some 22 feet and likely to drop another 7. There is a high probability that we will need to add to our ramps. If you have extra ramp material, please let me know. We also expect to find new places to ground out. <grin> You know, you could share some of that moisture. <grin> Be happy with what you have least you have our problem in the Great Plains.

What a waste!

It is too bad that someone hasn't figured out a way to pump all of that excess water back up north. The great lakes could use all of this water and they would still be low!

Too much water, can't put the boat in the water!

Splash day was going to be today! What a joy! Phone call from the manager of the club wednesday with the horrible news. Launching has to be postponed by a week! Water level has risen so much that water is now coming over the pier and that would leave the boats totally unprotected if we could even get to them! What a pity, and how ironic: there is too much water to go boating! And it's a known fact around here that come July, we'll probably complain about low water levels!

West Access

MG,I am at West Access Marina. There are a few boats that didn't get moved in time left in our marina's parking lot. These boats are on cradles and if the lake comes up another foot or two they won't have to pay launch fees this year. I took a john boat over saturday and motored around the parking lot. That was weird! Jeff

Move to Mark Twain

Jeff, consider moving to Mark Twain Lake. Higher water, more lake to sail!
