I am looking for information for rigging my MacGregor 22 to be launched by a crane. The yatch club I belong to stores boats under 27' on their trailers and uses cranes to launch them. We are not allowed to use slings due to the possiblilty that the boat might slip out of a sling and damage the boat and/or dock. Has anyone rigged a MacGregor or similar boat for crane lifting?

Jack, Are you slinging the boat and trailer, or

seperating the boat from the trailer and slinging the boat? The crane is the tricky part. It might prevent raising the mast before launch. If you can't raise you mast off the trailer then launch somewhere else and sail back. Hunters can raise the mast while on the water, but it would be a real pain in the fanny. Catalina's rely on the trailer so they might have a problem. I don't have a clue about Mac's. The launch somewhere else idea might be the least stressful depending on your ease of mast raising in full view of the club. Ray S/V Speedy

No Slings

Ray, No, the yatch club forbids the use of a sling due to past accidents were slings slipped. When this has happened in th past both the boat involved and the dock were damaged. Plus anyone operating the crane or on the dock at the time is in danger. They require lifting cables attached directly to the boat. On my Venture 17, I had direct access to the internal cross member bulkhead and was able to mount the lifting cables at the center of gravity. One on each side near the center line. Two additional cables were then rigged to the provide lateral stability. This lifting rig allowed me to lift with the mast up since the center of gravity and thus the lift point is aft of the mast and the lifting lines were on either side of the boom. On my MacGregor 22, the inner hull liner prevents direct access to the cross member bulkhead. Thus I need a different mounting approach. The lifting cables are 1 1/2" nylon cables. Steel cables are frowned upon since they can snap if placed under sudden stress.
