can anyone help me with building some sort of cradle to support the weight of an O'day 22 without experiencing too much stress on the hull..I 've had the boat for a couple of years but never had it out of the water..I want to remove all bottom paintand apply a barrier coat..the boat has a shoal keel which I imagine takes most of the weight. If anyone ha s any ideas I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE any input you can think of...THANKS

How O'Day did it
The original Shipping/storage cradles for the O'Day sailboats (pretty much all models) used a basic rectangular frame of wooden timber and the hull was supported by 2 plywood profile supports, one forward and one aft. For the 22, I think that used 8" x 8" beams about 10' long for the longitudinals, 4 cross beams (6" x 6") about 7' long, one about 12" in from each end, and 2 under the keel (about 6-12" in from fore and aft ends of keel). The keel set on these 2 cross beams. The hull was supported by plywood supports cut to match the shape of the hull over the 2 outer (furthest fore and aft) cross beams. These plywood parts were held up by short 4" x 4" posts on the beams, and braced to keep them from moving. I'll try to include a picture that shows a similar cradle for a 222, it sort-of shows what I'm talking about.

See the link, this guy used regular automotive jacks to lift the boat and trailer, then built a stand underneath the boat to drop the CB and work on it.

Art: If you can't get a cradle built or you're unable to fabricate one for yourself then you might consider jackstands sized for a fixed keel boat which draws as much as yours does with the drop keel down. I don't know about your part of the world but up here in the frozen north of the Great Lakes some boat yards offer jack stands to rent. Of course you can buy four of them but it would be quite and expense for a seldom used piece of equipment. Good Luck, Mike S/V PitterPat
