While working on the boat today I found 4 significant cracks under the rub rail.

The plan would be to remove the rub rail. Grind and glass the cracked areas to repair them.

Two questions.

1 any advice for removing the rub rail. I have never done that.

2 any issues with the repair plan?

Thanks

Are you sure the cracks are in the fiberglass of the hull? Looks to me like the cracks are in the white vinyl trim channel that’s part of the rub rail. The white channel is screwed or riveted onto the hull, then the black vinyl trim is inserted into the trim.

If it’s trim, it is not keeping water out or adding any appreciable structural strength. It’s purely cosmetic. If it were my personal boat, I’d leave it alone, because it’s a big job to replace it and expensive. It’s not worth the work to me.

It it’s the trim, the right way to fix it is to remove the black insert. Remove and replace everything the white channel, and then re install the black insert

I’m not familiar with the boat, so I could be mistaken about it being the channel for rubrail. . But it sure look like it from the photos.

Let me answer this one young lady.

This is a two part rub rail system with the outer being the black and the base which is white. From the cracks which is straight or wavy, the boat over time beat up against the rub rail. Where you see the straight cuts, that section was replaced as Hunter when producing the boat had only one long piece that wrapped from the starboard stern up to and around the bow and back to the stern on port side. The base was secured by stainless steel screws to the hull to deck joint with Hunter using 5200 as the sealant. If there are no leaks inside, you should be fine but looks a little off with the crack and straight cuts in the base.

Please confirm it is a white plastic base and there are no leaks inside on that side of the boat. If no leaks, leave it alone.

I had to replace about 6 feet of my plastic rub rail keeper last summer after a dock line broke letting the hull smash against the dock finger. It didn't just create a few cracks, it smashed the keeper so the rubber just hung in the water. They only stock grey plastic now, which is a little different color than the stock white. Plus you have to buy like 50 ft, not cheap.
If the rubber is still in place as it appears, and it were me, I'd leave it alone. You can pry out the rubber to check the screws near the crack, but if it isn't leaking or obviously loose, why bother?

@Crazy Dave Condon
Why? Is my answer wrong?

I like you, Dave, but I don't like it when people "young lady" me.
I'm too much of a feminist to let this pass without comment.

BTW, I'm old.
Old is good. Old is wise. Old is experienced. Old is fun.
I look my age.
My hair is naturally grey and I have never dyed it to stay young looking.

Gee whiz. My grandmother always said she was a young lady and even the older ladies like being called young lady at church. Nothing meant derogatory but just trying to be nice

In addition I know that rub rail all too well as I was told being the top dealer purchasing them plus repairing them as well

Thanks. You are correct it is only the plastic rub rail that is cracked. Actually after a closer look at least 2 of them do appear to be joints.

I do have water getting into the boat that I am chasing. This weekend I will investigate to see if this is where they come from.
