I know that sound!
I may be wrong but I think I heard once a while back that it's the sound of crabs and lobsters and other creatures of the bottom. Remember how well water transmits sound!

Pistol Shrimp
Despite being less than an inch long, the creatures can emit an astonishing 218 decibels - louder than a gunshot.
Pistol shrimp have one normal claw, and one claw that is about half the size of their bodies. The claw stays open until a muscle causes it to snap closed, ejecting a powerful jet of water traveling at an incredible 60mph. The snapping sound itself reaches 218 decibels - your eardrum ruptures at a mere 150.
A bubble forms in the low pressure area behind the stream of water, which is called a cavitation bubble. As the bubble implodes, it produces a flash of light and the interior temperature reaches over 5,000 degrees Kelvin - that's close to the surface temperature of the sun!

Jimlay, we once stayed at Miami Beach Marina for a few days hiding from a strong cold front and heard the noise day and night. The divers who cleaned the boat bottoms said the culprits were the shellfish/mussels who attached to the pilings when they opened and closed their shells. Good luck and good sailing, Ron
Here at the port we have shrimp that snap, snook that pop and sheepshead that crunch (barnacles).
The snook are sprinters; the pop the snook make is them pouncing on thier food fish and they move so fast you can't see them.

is actually krill(ghost shrimp) on hull. also added to that is fishies eating bottom growth off hull-- is a slightly louder sound than the krill make. crab babies also eat the slime of hull bottoms..... but is nothing wrong until the octopus lodges itself in the toilet inlet.....

Zeehag-there was a national geographic on the pistol shrimp. I am not sure they are inhabiting our hulls though. The most amazing part of the pistol shrimp data was the temperature that air bubble reached. Anyway it said the pistol shrimps little pop stuns fish long enough for the shrimp to grab them and start eating them.
The sound was so loud it would keep me up at night when I had a coral reef growing on my hull. I did a bottom job and it was completely silent. Now that it has been 3 years on this bottom job, I hear the sound again but not near as bad as when my boat sat for 10 years with out moving. It has to do with growth on the hull. I doubt it is fish eating things, but what does it matter. The cause is bottom growth, whether it's fish eating the growth or the creatures themselves, it is THE cause.

i have found krill and actually fishies eating my bottom growth-- they smak the boat with their tails also, and some baby crabs on my hull when i dont have frequent paint removal by divers.... just after my diver cleans, only the krill and snapper eating the krill
