I have a westerbeke 10 -2 diesel.the timing case cracked where the alternator attaches. I am not sure if it can be welded. I am not sure what type of metal the case is made of or if the parts are available. Right now everything is working fine except for a oil leak at the crack. After 6hours of motoring I lost 3/4 of a quart of oil. The alternator is still secure. Does anyone have any info on this problem. If I could get the parts and I am not sure of all the seals and gaskets needed. It looks like a very big and expensive job. Waiting for good news.

Sometimes they're aluminum. Is it in the front of the engine? Anybody know if JB Weld makes something for aluminum?

If the alternator bolt hole is not compromised and all it has is an oil leak consider epoxy. Grind a 45 degree bevel on both sides of the crack (left right and inside outside) and fill it with epoxy. Not pretty but I have used this method to great success on motorcycle engines.

The bevel only needs to be a couple of millimeters deep BTW. Just enough to give the epoxy something to grab to.

Start researching Mitsubishi L2E and see if that is not your engine. There is nothing 'marine' about that cover, except it being painted red..

STOP RUNNING YOUR ENGINE!!!!! If that ear breaks completely off you are going to be buying a new engine!!

The 33166 timing gear case is no longer available, I was just on the phone with my distributor ordering other parts and asked about it.

The Mitsubishi block your engine is based on is no longer in production either. That block was really only used, in the US, by Westerbeke so finding a Mitsu for parts will be extremely tough and you are far better off finding a used 10-2...

Remove the timing gear case and have it professionally welded back together. If you have an after market alternator on there go back to STOCK.....

DO NOT RUN YOUR ENGINE UNTIL YOU HAVE THIS WELDED..... It could be the difference between 15K and $150.00
