Cracked Thru Hull

Still on the hard- one day before scheduled launch. Saw "green crap" on the galley sink drain. Thought I'd fix it before launch. Put an 18" wrench on the street elbow threaded on to the thru hull just below the valve. The thru hull cracked right off at the hull. This thru hull had the dreaded "pink" appearance at the break. This thru hull is not bonded.

Replaced the thru hull today and resealed all. The root cause for the leak was a poorly installed sink drain flex hose. It looked like a vacuum cleaner hose with end cuffs all told 12" long.

Glad I tackled this on the hard.

Way cheaper to find this now, and so much better than finding it the hard way!

Great catch! I had a similar find with a shaft tube water feed. The thing just crumbled when I touched the hose….. an unexpected job but so happy it happened now on the hard!

Did you replace all components? I am in the process of replacing a few every year….. thru hull, valve, elbows. Haven’t experienced what you did yet but figure I will sleep better at night.

good luck

The cause wasn't due to any type of hose - it is dezincification of the brass. This is dependent mostly on time. You might want to carefully check your other ones and consider replacing all of your brass thruhulls. Beneteau uses DNZ brass instead of bronze and say they have a service life of 5yrs.

You are correct about the dezincification . I meant to say I would not have found the issue without the hose leak leaving a green trail. I was a little reluctant to put Marelon in below the water line on very short notice without any research. That's the next task.

Worth reading. Note the paragraph & pic showing "thread mismatch". Cheers/Len
