Cracked Head

I recently learned that my old 2QM15 has a cracked head. Thought it was just a matter of a valve job and head gasket but when it came back from the machine shop, clean, the crack was found.

We are having a hard time finding a replacement head. Not surprising considering the motor has been out of production for thirty-something years, so I've been told. Any suggestion as to where I might find one? Jorge?;)

Has anyone re-powered a Cherubini 33'?
If so, with what?

Replacement is the best option. But many a head have been welded. I am wondering why a machine shop would not recommend that. Also keep in mind that the head does not have to be from a marine engine. Look for any old 15 or 20 hp Yanmar including the tractor engines.

I did not know that welding was an option. The machine shop didn't even see the crack. It was discovered by the mechanic after he got it back from the machine shop. But on the phone he sounded like it was the kiss of death.

Welding may not be reliable, but it sure would be cheaper and easier than re-powering. That engine on ebay would be $3000/shipping, plus new prop, old engine removal, and installation of the new engine. Could be looking at $6500 (Murphy's Law). Not to mention the sailing time lost forever.

Third and best option is to find a head, even if it's in a junkyard.

Ed is right. It doesn't have to be from a marine engine. In addition to lawn tractors, that engine was put into a gazillion generators.

I would strongly recommend against welding the head. When I purchased my boat it was on the condition of the PO completing a valve job. Turns out the head was cracked and they welded it. Ran beautifully for a 3QM30 - until I motored up the St. Claire River. Then it spat white smoke and overheated. A welded head just won't take the punishment of these ultra high compression engines. Repower. It is money well spent. You will know exactly what you have for years to come. Peace of mind. And you will save a pile of weight.

Anyone have a head for a 3QM?
