Crack in Keel

Does anyone know a good place in San Diego to get a bottom paint job as well as a place that can handle replacing keel bolts and fixing a crack in the keel? I have a 1972 Catalina 27.

Try These Two Yards . . .

Justin, San Diego has a limited amount of boatyards and this time of year they are all fairly busy. Two places to try: I think it's called the "Southwestern" or "South Bay" boatyard in Chula Vista (in the Southwest corner of San Diego Bay). A friend said, about a week ago, they quoted him $600 for haul-out, pressure wash, light sanding, and bottom paint. Your keel work and whatever else would, of course, be extra. Another option is "Baja Naval" in Ensenada, Mexico. If you want to turn the whole thing into a mini-adventure this boatyard is about 60 miles south of San Diego. They have a website at www.bajanaval.com I e-mailed them (about six months ago) and they quoted me (if I remember right) $700 for bottom paint on my C-27. However, their labor rates are just $15 per hour per man. So you may wind up saving after considering the prices of the other work you need done. One thing about Baja Naval is that while the labor is cheaper any parts or paint can cost you a tad more. I've talked to three or four people who've had work done there and they were all satisfied. And you can stay on the boat during the work, something not always possible in San Diego. Good luck and let the rest of us know how you make out. Nick "Julia Bell" C-27 #86

Keel crack

Catalina Smile is infamous. I don't know about yards in SD but keep in mind that often times Catalina Smile is more cosmetic than structural. You can check out the archives on this site for more information on it. LaDonna

Water sneaking in

Thanks for your tips. I'll look into both options. I'm hoping it's only cosmetic. I'm a bit concerned about water in my bildge. Could it be a result of the crack? It's not a ton of water, just enough to keep the keel bolts rusting. I'm afraid I may also have water that seaped into other areas. I can hear a crunching sound when I step on the area of floor just forward of the bildge. I'm not positive, but I can't imagine that's too good. Any ideas?

Leaks

The water in your bilge could be coming from anywhere. Is it salty? It won't kill you to taste it. If it's relatively clean tasting, you have a leak/s elsewhere. Not surprising for an older boat. Tracing them is a pain though. As for the crunching...yikes! The liner in a 27 is pretty darn solid. Have no idea what it could be. Anyone else? LaDonna

Chrunching Sound

I always get nervious when someone writes "Yikes". Does anyone have any ideas on why there would be a chrunching sound? I hear it when I step on the cabin floor just froward of the bildge on my 1972 Catalina 27. It kind of sounds like foam chrunching.... Should I be concerned, or is this just part of owning a 30 year old boat.

GRIND AND BONDO

I GUESS THE CATALINA SMILE IS THE CRACK REFERRED TO IN MY KEEL AS WELL.IT RUNS ALL THE WAY AROUND ABOUT 8IN. FROM THE HULL.I WAS TOLD THAT THIS COVERING IS A TYPE OF BONDO LIKE REPAIRS FOR CARS.I PLAN ON GRINDING THIS CRACK DOWN AND WIDENING A COUPLE OF INCHES W/ A 20.00 GRINDER I JUST PURCHASED AND WAS TOLD THAT IT IS SURPRISING "SOFT" AND NOT VERY TIME CONSUMING.THEN APPLY THE BONDO ,SAND AND PAINT. FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME IF YOUR INTRESTED IN THE OUTCOME.

Crunching

Now that I'm thinking about it, I can't imagine that it's anything really structural. The hull is what you have to worry about and you'd be having a LOT more problems if *that* was crunching. Perhaps there's nothing solid under that spot (or it rotted away or whatever) and you're now just stepping on a thin sheet of fiberglass. That would account for the crunching sound. Only problem would be if it was weakened significantly and eventually gave way, leaving a hole in your cabin sole. Unfortunately, I have no clue how to "fix" that. LaDonna

We'll Just have to see

I plan on having the bottom painted in the fall. At that point I'll probably be re-enforcing the keel bolts and fixing the "Catalina Smile" if necessary. Perhaps that will be a good time to check out the crunching area and see if it's a sound I need to learn to live with or if it's something I should be concerned with. Thanks to all for your input.
