Cowl Vents

Hello All,

I cannot find any information in my pdf library where the two cowl vents on the port side are supposed to be piped. The PO had dryer hose connected to the cowl vents but they were so dry rotted, there's only a few inches coming down from the vents so I could see something was run there but know not what to. Right now, I have two shiny cowls on the rail that are nothing more than rain vents allowing water in the bilges.

I have mine installed too with nothing running to them. I am at a loss as to what to do with them.

My dad had cowl vents on his power boat but they were attached to blowers to blow the fumes out of the bilge before cranking that chevy 305 that powered the stern drive. Being as I have no 305 chevy nor a stern drive, other than venting fresh air in and venting exhaust air out, I don't know what to do with them and have seen no diagram on their piping.

Hey KingAirDriver, my dad was in the 82nd Airborne and admitted that everytime he went on a jump, they had to pick him up and throw him out. Atleast until they put him repair chutes behind a sewing machine and then made him QC cuz he did a great job.

One of the vents should be "plumbed" to the bottom of the locker, so that underway it will vent out gas fumes. The forward facing one doesn't need one.

Being OCD though, I put a small cheap bilge blower on the aft one connected to the hose.

CaptGregg I fly a former Army C-12C. It was "civilianized" as a Beechcraft Super King Air 200. We also have a stock King Air 90 and 2 hot rodded King Air Taurus 90's. And a half dozen Cessna 206's and 182's. We do civilian tandem sport jumping, kinda like amusement park rides! LOL It's pretty cool, today I went to work at 10am, and was done and on my way home by 1130. Flew 1 load of jumpers to 17,900 feet. Took all of 14 minutes! And to top it all, the dropzone is located right across the Indian River (ICW) from Kennedy Space Center. Wonderful views. I used to fly at Skydive Raeford, right next to Ft Bragg, and we had the 82nd guys there all the time. I was one of the civilian pilots that flew the US Army Golden Knights Parachute team.

I normally don't have to throw anyone out...9500 loads of sport skydivers, I have only brought down about a dozen first timers because they chickened out. Most of the time, they realize that I beat them to the ground, and the ride down with me is far scarier than jumping.

My job doesn't suck! I better stop bragging before Mr. Patterson comes down here and kicks my butt....

You kidding? I laughed like hell about the ride down.

Years ago, I finally talked practice wife into flying with me. I was thrilled, and we got to the Myrtle Beach airport before she could change her mind. I rented an OLD dog, I think a 172, and the starter was bad, and they told me I'd have to hand crank it. No prob. I sat woman in the seat, pushed the throttle in a bit, told her to hold the brakes so it wouldn't run over me, and while I spun 'er up, I looked in and her knuckles were white holding the yoke, and pushing the brakes so hard it's a miracle the lines didn't rupture. It fired, and smoke ROLLED! Man, I'm talking about a RAG. These things really don't bother me, in an engine out, hell I can hit the beach on the hard pack. And that's just the beginning of that ride, haaaaha.
She was less than enthused. And never did it again..

I took one flying lesson in my teens when my dad owned a twin engine navion. He sold the plane due to rising fuel costs.

Same setup

Being OCD though, I put a small cheap bilge blower on the aft one connected to the hose.

I have the same setup, one cowl has a blower with the inlet hose in the engine compartment...sucking the hot/noxious fumes out. The second cowl utilizes the negative pressure from the blower to pull fresh air in. This cowl doesn't have a hose attached to it because it opens to a space that is continuous with the bilge/engine compartment. Some cowls do not have a blower attached but use the pressure gradient created from the natural motion of the boat (one cowl faces forward, the other aft).

Hope this helps...

OH and I was one of those crazies that would voluntarily jump out of perfectly good airplanes, whatta-rush!!

My hat's off to you guys, I don't have a problem trusting a plane but I do have a phobia about trusting a sheet or rubber band with my life. It's not the fall that bothers me, it's that damned sudden stop that scares me. LMAO

I'd replace it with a fishing rod holder or a cup holder.

How do you let the rain water drain out of cup holders. Or do just intend to make brownie points with the mosquito farmers? Right now he said the rain water gets in and fills the bilge.

I thought previously about putting me a drain plug at the bottom center of the bilge like power boats have since I trailer my vessel and made drainage easier on land but was cautioned against it.

I created an "epoxy dam" on the cowl facing the bow for water running down the rail but I don't think it's very effective.

It never rains in California, but just in case they come with caps.

I think I would put in a bilge pump either electric or manual or both. You can T it off from your cockpit drain tubes.

I have a plastic thru-hull that connects to the bilge pump hose above the waterline that the PO installed on the port side but when that rail is under water (or damn well near it) that thru-hull could be letting water flow back down the tube and out the pump into the bilge, there's no seacock there to shut it off. HMMMM, just another thing to put on my list! Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I am sure when the power is not applied to the pump that impeller can flow in reverse and allow water to flow in the bilge.

Gregg, just put in a plastic check valve inline close to the pump. No need to replumb the whole thing. The hose should be looped up high in the coamings anyway, so you would have it standing on 'er ear to allow water ingress.

Plumbing it out the cockpit drain is a good idea.

However; the two most common water ingress potentials on a C22 are keel cable tube, and cockpit drains. So, if you have a failure at the valve, water is coming in, the pump is pumping water, well, back into the boat. That may work poorly.
Unless you get a bigger pump. Something like 50 gallons a minute.

But wait a minute. All of that 50 gpm's are coming back into the boat.

Maybe a BIGGER pump...

I never thought about looping the drain hose above the thru-hull but I like the idea of a check valve better.
