im looking to replace the cowl vents with solar vents, is there a model out there somewhere that will just snap right into the cowl vent frames?

Don't believe so....

H31 1984 I've never seen a solar vent that small. I just installed a 4" solar vent in the front hatch, and a SS louvered vent in a companionway board. This allows movement of air from one end of the boat to the other. I always keep my cowl vents turned in the same direction because though there are two cowl vents, they are connected together. My theory is if they are turned in opposite directions, air goes in one and out the other, thus no effective ventilation. Am I wrong?

solar vents

Wm has snap in solar vents in both 3" and 4" sizes-one of them should fit

Don't think they will do much!

Jeff: We have a solar vent in the hatch over the salon. It does circulate air, but not that much. I do not think it is worth your time or money to install them in the dorad vent. I would suggest the you mount them directly into a hatch so you get direct ventilation.

Steve's idea is a good one-we installed a 4" solar vent, set to exhaust, in the dorade on our 356 and it didn't seem to move much air-we added another in the forward hatch, set to blow in, and now we get a decent airflow.

VENTILATION...SOLAR...DORADE

THE TWO COWL VENTS ON TOP OF THE DORADE BOX ON THE H-31 ARE USELESS. YOU ARE WASTING TIME ADDING SOLAR THERE. THE PROPER WAY TO VENT THESE BOATS IS TO INSTALL A 4" VENT IN THE FORWARD HATCH & A FOUR INCH IN THE CABIN TOP HATCH. ADDITIONALLY I HAVE TWO OF THE LARGER SIZE NICRO CLAM VENTS IN THE MAIN COMPANION WAY HATCH. IN ADDITION, I HAVE ONE OF THE NICRO LARGE CLAM VENTS IN THE COCKPIT NEAR THE ENGINE CONTROLS. THIS ALLOWS THE AIR TO FLOW FROM BOW TO STERN. THE COWL VENT I USE FORWARD IS THE LARGE NICRO STANDARD STYLE...IN THE CABIN HATCH I USE A NICRO 4" SOLAR FORCING AIR INTO THE BOAT. YOU NEED TO MOVE AIR THRU THESE BOATS. IN THE SUMMER IN SF...THE WIND COMES FROM ONE DIRECTION...CONSISTENTLY. SO, I USE A COWL VENT ON THE CABIN HATCH DURING THAT TIME. IF THE WIND IS BLOWING...THE 4" COWL WILL INFLUX MORE AIR THAN THE SOLAR VENT.

Solar vents

After acquiring my H34 last fall I noticed that the flow through ventilation was poor. There was a noticable milldew odor now attributable to the cushions. On the 34 the dorade vents are a custom (5") size. I made adaptor rings from a Starboard-like material to fit Nicro 4" day/night solar vents using the same screw pattern in the dorade top. With passive vents forward and louvers in the companionway butterfly doors, there now seems to be enough air movement to keep the boat from smelling musty. When the warmth returns I'll see if I need to add any more solar vents to increase the air flow through the boat.
