Has anybody replaced the cowl/dorade vents with a solar Nicro fans?? You couldn't have one in/one out that close together, but I was thinking to vent both "in" and just vent the small read hatch under the dodger for exhaust. Bob F. "Andiamo"

Did it today on my 376

The only problem is that the fan unit is too wide and hits a bump out on the roof. I need to take a small piece out of the fan unit to make it fit. Russell

The Dremel tool makes it fit

I replaced them with the stainless Nicro. As Russell indicated, there is a bump in the way. I made some positioning marks and used the Dremel cutting tool to cut away enough stainless to make a fit. I set them to exhaust. There's enough gap in the companionway hatch to allow for inflow.

Using a Dremel tool is a great idea!

I'll take mine down next weekend. Russell

Venting the vent

After notching with a dremil and installing two them on our 380 I later had to take the cover off that holds solar panel to find out that there is not a direct conection between the inside vents and the cowl vents on the outside. So very little of the nicro vents air flow accuely seems to afect the air flow inside the boat. I don't think it was worth the $200 and time cutting and fiting (but only my opinion) Andy Hansom 380 Vanishing Point

Does not make sense to install them there.

Bob: I do not think that installing a vent in the dorade vent makes much sense. The air does not flow directy in and out of the boat thru these vents. They are made so you can get some air circulation but because the are also designed to keep water out they are not going to flow must or any air thru them. You should consider either cutting a hole in the cabin or thru the hatches (my first and only choice). Then you can have an intake and exhaust (one in each hatch).

Have Nicro Solar vent in my head :)

I have a 4" Nicro Day&Night solar vent in my head and it works great. You need to caulk a little bit to connect inside and outside. It costs $139 at West Marine (stainless - no UV problems). The battery lasts about 4 years and can be bought on the net for $9 incl S/H. It works great, day and night, and permanently vents your head, whether your are on board or not. It is absolutely recommended. Just leave the dorade as is. Alex Alex
