Coupling leaking water

If I were you, I'd be more concerned with the hose and hose clamps but in response, clean off the corrosion, loosen the lock nut, try tightening the shaft nut a quarter turn at a time and retighten the lock nut when the drip is minimized. You should probably also replace the packing while you're in there if it is old.

I agree with you it is most likely the packing. I have a paid prof. coming by to have a look tomorrow.

I'm assuming by what I see happening to the brass in pic you are in Southern Cal area? You will always have a drip coming out of the packing gland and should, but that corrosion above definitely indicates something else going on. Do you by chance have a hot water heater?
