How about setting aside a spot on the home page that would be a count down for the 09 sailing season . I know some of you say we are always sailing ,but for us poor sailors up north we something to look forward to . May be they could set up two or three zones ,say mid Atlantic coast ,long island ,and New England areas .With one major ice storm and now what looks like a series of snow storms ,we need something !

Sure, tell me what "launch day" is by zone and I can easily set up a countdown. Great idea!

We have something Ed. It's called ski season. Strap on the boards and get some freshies. A lot of the sailors I know are also skiers. In this way we have it made over those poor bastards that can only sail year round. Of course there are some places where you can do both.

The other advantage we have is that those nice week long charters in the BVI around the middle of March feel that much better. And they are close enough to our new season to start seriously planning to step the mast.

Rodger that Phil how about April 1 for New England area ,as for the other areas I am sure others will chime in as to a date . Tim I spent 2 years in the Alps and love to ski ,but the NE winters are to cold for me now .I wait til March to ski ,more snow and sun . And just as the snow leaves I know it's sailing time .By the way my son has skied several time already and he said the conditions are Great .

Hey Phil,
You can just make it Jan. 1 for us gulf coast guys and gals. Pretty foggy here today, but temps. in the mid 70's. I guess my stir the pot mentality is showing, but just couldn't resist.

Vernal equinox March 20, 2009. Days remaining 93. Sunrises left in this year 13. Full moons until the vernal equinox, 3. Full moon in March, 11th . 9 days before spring. April 1st; 1st quarter of the moon . Is that a good sign for launching or should we only launch on a full moon or a new moon? Spring tides and all that.

LOL, Man am I feel a bit envious. Well I always consider April 10the the date. Long Island. I can't recall why but I think a marina gave me that date many yrs ago and it stuck.

Always consider the Strickly Sail show the halfway point in Chicago. Just a little over a month to go. Monroe Harbor 'officially' opens May 1st.

That could possibly work Rich. Work will have me very busy in January but February would be good. We are going to Wildcat for the New Years weekend.

April is still ski season and time to open the camp so May 1st is usually the date in Maine.

Check out the bottom/center column of the home page on SailboatOwners.com... it's simple, but it will load fast. :)

Sorry guys but here in SW FL it's always a sailing day.
When it gets down to 60 Burlington Coat Factory runs down parka commercials and dogs wear sweaters.
Perhaps you guys need to live as I do "Never Live Where It Gets Colder Than Your Age".

Ice "goes out" on Sebago Lake the middle of April.

I think my Marina starts charging if you don't splash by June 1.

I am always amazed at all the empty slips and moorings in June. Some folks barely make it in for July 4th weekend, which is the biggest weekend in Winthrop harbor with the fireworks shot off over the harbor.

April 1st would be pretty aggressive for New England...unless it will serve as a reminder to buy my bottom paint!

Although we always plan a daysail on the first of January, just to get the year's first sail out of the way, my yacht club's first cruiseout of the season is traditionally set for MLK weekend, which is 30 days from now according to the official countdown clock. This year 18 boats will converge on Jack London Square, and we've all got tickets to Yoshi's for Saturday night jazz. James Moody Quartet. Signups have already closed because there are no more slips available. Yes, it's difficult to wait.

I'm with you. The earliest that I'm allowed to go in the better. Yet I too see boats being prepped till July at the marinas.

I have to be in the water by March 27th or they start charging 25 dollars a day and thats only for the select few that send in there winter storage fee early and then we get back 10% and the rest of the marina has to be in the water by April 15th cause the whole area is a parking lot for the ferry service to Fire Island.
