Towing my 260 Hunter from Golden B.C. (Canada) to Alameda Ca. in 7 days very excited and looking forward to sailing the bay for 2 weeks. Made reservations to stay at Pier 39 for a couple of days to do some tours around the city. Any tips would be appreciated never sailed in the ocean before.

San Francisco Bay is on our bucket list too. I would expect cool weather and wind. Been years since we've been up there. Alcatraz Island is a must see!

Overnighting out at Treasure Island and Angel Island is great. The area around the GG Bridge can be very rough. Watch for fog. It is really good to have a GPS in case you get in the fog (watch out for the ships and ferry's). Weather can be cold and damp or warm and sunny and anything in between.

If I haven't suggested it yet to you, buy and read Kimball Livingston's "Sailing The Bay" - it will answer ALL of your questions, plus it's a great read, much better than a traditional cruising guide. There are two editions, and both are great, the first would be just fine for your trip.

Where in Alameda?

The Bay is a GREAT place. You might want to look at our web pages about our "short hops" around the bay.

A BIG tip for you. When you stay at Pier 29 (A FUN place we stayed at often), if you eat at any of the places, show them your dock key and ask for the discount! In some cases, our very nice dinner was half price!
It was about 3 days before we found out about that. :cussing:

And as was said, Treasure Island is a great place to stay a night or two. We used to go to Angel Island and pick up a mooring, but they have raised the price so high, it's not worth it now.

If you head down into the south bay, us caution, the water can get thin down there.

HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!

OK, Jill just went into a LONG list of stuff that I should have said!

Fog can be a problem.

Bring clothing for hot HOT weather AND cold Cold COLD weather!!!!!
On one forth of July day, we were becalmed, sweating in bathing suits, sailed in fine weather for an hour or 2, had 2 reefs in, rail in the water and cold, wearing foul weather gear. ALL IN THE SAME DAY!

She said I should add that Trader Joe's is a GREAT place to provision and one of the stores is a short walk from Pier 39. Don't forget it's the birthplace of two-buck-chuck wine. :D

You can anchor in Aquatic park and get a great photo of your boat in front of the big Ghirardelli Chocolates sign!

You can anchor in Richardson's Bay and do some super sight seeing around the area if you decide to dink in or catch a transient slip for a night.

a panorama of the view from Guenevere's cockpit. On the left is the entrance to the bay and on the right is all the way at the back of the Richardson's bay.
