This may be a repeat but we are wondering if anyone has some advise for a couple of 50 something sailors who lost their halyard on the main mast today. It is right at the top of the mast and we aren't able to climb the mast ladder ourselves. Any ideas would be helpful.

you need a climber

Try to find someone who will go up the mast for beer or wine! Or else you will have to have a boatyard use a boom to get up there.

we did this.....

Ok, we did this, I won't mention any other names and this wasn't my boat it happened to......but.... we taped (with electrical tape) 4 boat hooks together along with lashing them with a line.....IT WORKED, so ...... The guy holding them up to catch the hook on the halyard had some strong arms. He attempted the climb first, but the last time he had done that was like 10 years prior. Alright, we were definitely hoping no one actually would ever know about this.... but without mentioning names... maybe it could help you!

Use the jib halyard

From your description, I can't quite tell if you lost your main or jib halyard. Which ever one you lost, you can go up using a bosen's chair attached to the other halyard. Someone in your marina probably has a chair you can borrow. Or, did you lose both halyards? Depending on the size of your boat and mast height, you may be able to motor over next to some high bulkhead or piling and have someone get on it. Then use a boat hook.

Nice N Easy

Going Up

What I did when I lost mine was to tie a frieds boat up beside mine and had him crank my up on his mast in a bosn's chair. Using a boat hook, grabbed my halyard with no problems.

Thanks for the help

Thank you to all who offered their advice. Simon who manages the docks at Paige Point Inn Marina kindly climbed our web ladder and retrieved the halyard. He came along just as we were leaving to get some pvc pipe to make an extension with a hoop on it.
