Could this be a Bonsai gin pole?

The recent discussion on gin poles prompts this. When I purchased my used 260 it was supplier with the standard 260 gin pole PLUS the object in the picture. The picture on left hand side shows the base which fits nicely into tabernacle. The picture on right shows the whole “thing” including U-sections which are on port to starboard if attached in tabernacle and hence not perfect to mast lowering! Lastly, the length is 90 cm (3 foot) which is inconsistent with standard gin pole size of 8ft +. So … any suggestions what this might be?

emergency tiller

That's your emergency tiller. It attaches to the top of the rudder post.

more on the "thing"

I don't think it is an emergency tiller - whilst Bounty Hunter now has wheel steering, it originally had tiller steering - I have original tiller and attachments for back-up. Also the "thing" is very solid in construction. The stainless steel pin goes though the hole in the "thing" which must attach it to "another thing”.

It is an emergency tiller

In the weird event of steering failure all wheel steering 260's came with a secondary tiller. I have the same one stowed in the locker. Michael

Calm day exercise

I recall when I bought the boat, the dealer indicated it was the emergency tiller. I just grunted, barely acknowledging to myself that the connection was not immediately intuitive. I just wanted to get the sails up and go. With this thread, I think I have realized that maybe I shouldn't wait until I need it to figure out how to use it. I'm going to print George's pictures and head down to the dock.
