I need to replace my prop shaft cotter pin. The prop shaft is bronze and I have a prop zinc mounted at the end of the shaft on the special nut that comes with the zinc. I can't find a big enough bronze cotter pin can I use a stainless steel cotter pin?

Bronze and 316 stainless steel are very close on the nobility scale so they will not react with each other. However, stainless steel should not be used under salt water as it is subject to stress crack corrosion in that environment.

I have seen many boats with a ss cotter pin in the shaft. If you haul your boat each winter, you can probably get away with a ss pin. It would be best to have a bronze pin. Check Cheasapeake Fastners in Annapolis for a bronze pin.
