True cost?

I am not commenting on whether or not you were ripped off or the guy changed his quote. What i am commenting about is the true "cost" to a boat yard to do the job. My son worked last summer for one of the premier boat yards in the annapolis area. he washed, waxed boats, sanded and painted bottoms. He was unskilled labor and earned $6.oo an hour. In MD, the cost to an employer for an employee's w-comp, unemployment and payroll taxes is 14%. (trust me, i am an employer and i know this)That means that the cost to the yard for the employee was $6.84 per hour. let's add in the cost of materials at $25. The boats are already paying the yard a monthly storage fee, so the yard is earning income there as well. Obviously we can't calculate the cost of realestate, taxes or business liability insurance. now the math, lets say for the sake of argument, that it took him all day to wash and wax a 40 foot boat and the yard charged $12 a foot (very conservative price) That would mean the boat owner paid $480 for the job. My son, who did the work in 8 hours at $6 earned $48 dollars. After taxes, social security, medicare, etc, he probably netted $30. cost to the boat yard for labor and materials was approximately $25. Guess at $25 for realestate, taxes, and liability. for a total cost of $100. don't get me wrong, i don't dispute the need for the yard to make this money. must business need to make higer profit margins on some services in order to provide other services at lower margins. Businesses are not non-profit organizations. My point is that many of the yard employees earn only slightly more than minimum wage. Tips are not required, but the guy doing your boat probably netted $30 bucks for the job i am sure he would appreciate a cash tip. p.s. I also believe in tipping the gas dock workers. They also make only slightly more than minimum wage. If you can afford to put $30-$50 bucks of diesel in your boat, how about a $5 tip to the dock hand!

Hey! Use your own name!

If you have an opinion, don't hide behind mine. Abe asked for opinions and his post stirred things up. So what? I have nothing against him. If you have something to say, use your own name next time.

14% Jen?

Sounds very low for the wages being paid and in an industrial setting. That figure may apply in an office setting with folks making significantly more than minimum wage but for a boat yard the insurance is very much higher I am sure. At least here in the great state of Texas we do not have to worry about a state income tax. The do make up for it in franchise, selective sales taxes and on license and registration fees. Also what comes around goes around. Abe is going to have a hard time finding someone to do his boat next time. It would not surprise me at all if they demand all the money upfront, do a poor job, drink all his liquor and kick his dog. I feel bad for the dog. The stars at night are big and bright Deep in the heart of Texas.

Do it yourself

It is a boat isn't it! There is nothing cheap on a boat. Sure they were unskilled workers getting $10 an hour. Nice mark up for the marina owner! If your going to pay... your going to pay baig time!

Am I missing Something?

From all appearances, someone used Scott's name to post a response and then he is criticized for objecting. It looks like Scott has every right to object and certainly should not be criticized for it.

Taking the Kids to the Zoo!

To Everyone on this Thread I say thank you. It is rare i get to observe reportedly grown people act like children. And what a treat it is. This thread has it all. Mystery, heated accusations, Intrigue. In fact if we had a little gunplay this could be a bogart film. Of course i can get as riled up as anyone regarding a contract dispute. Because after all thats what this was. Albeit a vague verbal contract at best. My guess is both parties were to blame maybe equally. And if not equally then at least partially. My profession revolves around contracts for work. I see bumps in the road everyday. I however have long ago left this kind of nonsensical debating of fault and morality in the rear view. The answer to harmonious contract negotiations is simple. Communication is the key. Without it there is chaos and heartache. The parties involved had poor communication. And in the end opinions did not meet. Who cares whos wrong or right the terms were undefined and someone was bound to feel slighted. In all work for hire arrangements the basic question is. What is being exchanged? If it is service work for money all parties must be clear in thier intentions. Very clear or disaster will strike. As it did in this case. Now as for all the impassioned posts on this thread I say three cheers. Cause it's a heck of a read. I hope that when i reach my thirties this thread will still be going. And I hope it's even more out of context and unfounded. In regards to personal attacks and General vicious behavior. If you ask me we should all make nice and go sail :p

Relax, Abe!

It looks like upper-case ABE and lower-case scott is amusing the rest of us. My guess is that the imposter is really .... Droop in NYC! I've noticed his dark side on other threads (he recommended a C 22 for ocean passages). After #41, I then thought maybe there is another Scott on Lake Hopatcong, which isn't large enough for 2 Scotts. I thought we would have to settle that somehow. I did feel bad about the unmerciful beating you took on this thread. Afterall, you must have had some question, otherwise you wouldn't have posted. I have no hard feelings with you. I do find it amusing when boat owners complain about spending money. Haven't we all heard that if you want to know what it is like to own a sailboat, stand in a cold shower and throw money down the drain! Not that I think all boat owners are wealthy, how could we be with this addiction! Josh, for a youngster of so few years, you are very wise! We're so glad you look down upon the fray! ;)
