My little Renault is running fine but getting parts seems to be a problem. I was wondering if anyone could give me a ballpark figure on what a new or rebuilt 8 to 10 HP diesel would cost? I would also need a gear. I have heard a number of about $7,000 for the engine alone not counting the cost to have the old removed and the new installed. Could that be correct? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You want to spend as much on the engine as your boat is worth? Wow! Keep it running. Do what ever is needed. Phil said he was going to have parts on this site but I haven't seen them yet. Might ask whats going on.

Well the boat might be worth more with a newer engine. I would say about $9,000. Now I have heard a new engine might be $3,000 plus gear and labor. I can't do the work. The alternative is to cut a hole in the bottom and install an outboard. The boat was originally designed for an outboard and the hull section can be removed. I don't have a Hunter. It's a Seaforth. Displacement is 4,000 lbs. The boat is in excellent condition. Obviously, worth more with the diesel but, I would have to spend the money first. In the end I would probably come out even as far as a selling price is concerned. I like the boat but don't think the diesel route makes sense.

How about

How about a stern outboard. Remove the diesel and use the space for storage. Sounds like a cheeper option to me considering the worth of the boat.

A transom bracket and an outboard. In fact a four stroke maybe preferable over a diesel anyway.

Transom Outboard

Outboard seems the best idea. In fact, the boat was originally designed to have one in an aft well. The well now serves as a locker. The locker can be removed and the hull can be cut out and the outboard mounted. Of course, doing the hull work will add to the cost. In the long run the outboard seems the way to go. Since the board has a canoe stern I don't really want to mount in on the transom. It would be difficult to reach and there is a boomkin in the way also. Thanks for your thoughts.

repower

Hi Wayne: I hope this helps. I have a 27 1983 in very good shape but the old 1gm Yanmar didn't have the power I needed, I tried a 3 blade prop but couldn't get enough get up and go. I decided to repower when a friend of mine decided to repower his Hunter 33 1/2 he bought a new engine a 3GM for $5000 in Mastry in St. Pete so I bought his old 2GM for $2500 it was in very good shape teh mechanic charged me $2000 for installing it and now I have power to spare I have an 18hp. since you where interested in prices here they are. BTW I sold my old 1GM to another fellow for $1200 and all 3 boats where repowered at the same time so it was a good deal for everybody. I don't regret what I did and now I have more money tied up in my boat that what I can get for it, but I love my little boat. I'm thinking of putting refrigeration now. Good luck Ed

Thanks Ed, your information helps alot. I think a new lGM goes for about $4,400 plus installation. That would probably equal the value of the boat, but I also like the boat alot. It fits our use to a T and is very comfortable. Actually, the present Renault is running fine and I think another distribuor will be offering parts, per this board. I also think the advantage of the diesel is worth the extra dollars. If you enjoy the boat and sailing I guess the money part becomes less important. Any kind of boating costs. Gas up here is at $2.30 a gallon, but the prices have been going down recently. Diesel isn't much less at the dock but goes a lot farther. Thanks, again.

Labor to repower

At the Chicago Strictly Sail show, the Yanmar rep quoted me a labor cost of around 40 hours to repower. Of course, you could reduce that by 1) removing the Renault diesel yourself, and 2) selling same on this site! Certainly, if it is running, its worth something to someone here.

1GM

Hi Wayne this is Ed again. You said that a 1GM is around $4500, why don't you check for the price of the 2GMF I don't think the price difference is so great and if you already decided to take the plunge a few hundred dollars will not break the bank; I had a 1GM and it was a great little engine, but when I needed it in a storm or in a opposite tide It was clearly overmatched, that was the reason that I had to repower. Try some of the nautical magazzines, every once in a while somebody advertises a used one. Sorry I don't want to tell you what to do but I've been there I've done that Ed
