Blue Skies

I live in Missouri. I found a 29 foot sailboat in Michigan. It comes with a trailer. I've pulled trailers all my life, but never across state lines or oversized loads. Local boat dealer wants $3,000 to get it. What permitts do I need? Do I need one for each state? Where to I go for details? Will I pay sales tax in Michigan? Thanks.

Vacation Idea

You can avoid all the highway problems by sailing your new boat to Missouri. Depending on where in Michigan the boat is, you should be able to sail to Chicago, then motor down the Illinois River and pick up the Mississippi just upstream from Grafton at Pere Marquette State Park. You may have to drop the mast in Chicago for some of the bridges across the Illinois, and there are a few stretches where some extra fuel would be a good idea. With a little luck this current flood should be over by the time you arrive. I don't think bringing the empty trailer to Missouri would be nearly as much of a problem. BTW what is the beam of the boat and the width of the trailer? Harvey Small s/v Waiting for the Sun

boat moving

YOur local dealer who wants 3000.00 to move a boat is more of a pirate than a dealer, I have owned and operated trucks for several years and that rate is just silly, if the boat is over eight feet wide you will need permits for the states that you go thru, lots of people trailer hunter 260s all over the place and they exceed 8 ft, so it depends on how much over 8 feet the boat is, permits are not that expensive to get :call your nearest truck stop or look in your yelllow pages for s company like transceiver, they can get your permits for you and you pay them it is not a big deal, hope this helps you , if not and you still need help email me at mmsailor@aol.com good luck with the boat let me know if I can do anything Mike , B

Boat Moving

I moved my C25 from Perry Lake, Kansas to Atlanta with a company out of the Ozarks. Sorry I don't remember their name and it was only $900. Type "boat hauling" into google and you will see there are a lot of options out there. I agree with the other post $3000 is robery.

What kind of vehicle would you tow with?

The first problem I see here is the total weigh. The boat weighs in at about 9000 lbs then you add another 2000-3000 lbs for the trailer etc. This is going to take a big truck to say the least. The beam is 10'6" the boat has a 4' keel and 6'2" head room. Now if you can get some insurance to make sure if you screw up you don't end up with a liability instead of an asset. You should be able to get a couple of quotes on a delivery. If you can find a delivery crew that is moving a boat north and they could return with your boat, you should save some money. Check out all of your alternatives before you decide on this venture. I like motoring it down the river better than trying to truck it yourself. About the only way to get around the sales tax issue is to purchase it in a state without sales tax and leave it there for several months. Then you are just transfering title in your home state.

Deep Water Transport

I just moved a boat from MS to NC, got four quotes and Deep Water Transport 800 382-2628, was the lowest price and provided outstanding service. Glad I didn't attempt to move myself!

$3K too much

I just had my 460 (46 feet, 14 ft beam, just fit under the bridges) transported from SF to Seattle for about $3300. Get a quote from a trucking company rather than a dealer. There are other costs potentially involved - maybe your dealer was including them? Did his cost include haul-out, dropping the mast, etc?

taxes and moving the boat

Your either going to have to pay taxes where you get the boat or where you take it. Opt for where you take it cause if its less than your ahead. If its more and you pay where you get it, then you have to make up the difference where you take it.. I bought my 380 in Flordia in 2000. Sales tax is 6% there and in Solano County California its 7 . I would have had to made up the difference. The transport was pretty reasonable ($6500). Some places wanted $10,000....SHOP!!!!!
