Not all boats have the same width, so a per foot price will likely be based on the broadest beam and deepest bilges.

bottom paint cost

Sand sailor, you did tell us if you wanted a price for a boat yard to do the bottom or you plan on doing it yourself. to sand and paint the bottom of my P26w with 2 coats of Donovan Marine ablative B costs as follows 1 Gal of paint $72 1/2 a dz sheets of sandpaper and a
gallon of lacquer thinner about $18 I do the wormyself Now my friend on the other hand has his 34 footer sanded and painted by the yard 2 gallons micron plus labor and supplies about $700

$700 is not a bad price for that job. The paint is $450 by it's self.

The yard I was in did everything by the linear foot. So if you had an extra wide beam you got a bit of a deal.

Do you "really" mean remove & repaint. This is not cheap to strip them down. I don't think you will get it done for $700 (or anywhere near that price).

I just got a quote today to do my bottom with one coat of Interlux Ultra. $960 Includes the haul out..

I figure I can save 200 to 300 to do it myself.

Typical cost in a San Diego area boatyard is $25-30 per foot and would include haul out, power wash and 1 coat of paint, doubled up on waterline and leading edges of keel and rudder. A second coat of paint will add 250-350 to that. They will NOT remove all the paint for that price. Extra prep work.... paint removal, blister repair, epoxy primer etc will be mo' money. So.... if you could get a quote for 700-800 got your 27 footer... go for it.

However........ putting bottom paint on a boat is probably the easiest boat project ever if there's minimal prep... You shouldn't have to completely remove the existing paint, unless you're putting hard shell over ablative... and the standard procedure is to power wash the bottom (or have your diver give it a good scrubbing right before haul out) lightly sand and then roll on the paint.

If you're on a budget... you will save a lot of money if you can do your own work. Most boatyards will allow DIY as long as you don't violate environmental and safety regs or hire outside help that aren't on their contractor list.
Power sanding is especially regulated in a yard, and you will be required to protect the surrounding boats from your residue. For that reason a lot of boat owners choose paint strippers over power sanders.

Call around to a few yards to get some quotes. Ask them about DIY conditions. Get a professional opinion on what extra prep may be needed.

I started stripping bottom paint off on my E27 using peel away-6 that I found at Lowes hardware store. First-i tried it on a rudder - worked great, only, it seemed that I didn't wait long enough for the paint to soften all the way to the gel coat, so it took some serious scrubbing with a plastic spatula. There is another peel away product designed especially for marine bottom paint removal (peelaway-2 and marine peelaway, which is almost double the price) and not available at Lowes. If you end up using #6 - put on a thick layer and don't let it dry - cover it with plastic film(I used plastic wrap).
If there are not too many layers of old bottom paint - it will work great!
It took me 1 gallon (4 buckets $13/ea) of peelaway-6, 30 hour soaking time and 4 hours to scrape it off from one half of the 27 ft boat bottom.
One more half to go...I really want to get peelaway-7 they say- it's stronger than #6

Cheers, Alex

Mich, I have no idea what kind of paint it was...it looked red/rusty red color very thick layer, my guess 3-4 coats...in some spots as thick as a 500 microns(1/2 millimeter) or so.
I'll try to find out from the boatyard owner what kind of paint was used...must have been some cheep stuff, because it didn't look too good...
