cosmetic Bulkhead repair

Now that I have got most of the major issues under control on my boat it is now time to address some of the cosmetic issues. At the top of this list is repairing water damage at the bottome edge of a bulkhead in the aft stateroom of my Morgan Out Island. The trouble is is that I don't know how to go about repairing the damage. Perhaps some of the grey beards on this site can give me some direction. Should I fit a thin sheet of teak ply to the front of the bulkhead; or, should I cut the damaged veneer out and laminate a new veneer in?

I would go for new veneer. Probe it with a knife and be sure that it IS just cosmetic. Cut the new veneer to shape and scribe it in and cut out the damage. It will always look patched but better than splintered.

As Ross said make sure it's cosmetic first. Another option would be to make a teak baseboard trim tall enough to hide the water damage. Doing this you would avoid having to match the veneer which is very, very tough even for a skilled restoration specialist.

I like that better. You can cover a lot of sins with some trim.

Thanks for the good advice. I believe, Main Sail, that trim might be the way to go. I am going to start taking measurements this weekend. I have some iroko laying around that should work out just fine for this task.

I did the same exact repair on my C30 last season. I used a piece of teak molding screwed to the bulk head. I taped a piece of news paper to the bulkhead and folded it along the contour of the floor to make a templet. It came out looking good and solved the problem easily.

I have a couple of 'splinter' areas that need repair...I'm going with the trim. Who'd know?

I am having new carpet installed in the aft state room. The unusually cold weather here in north AL has delayed the installation. As soon as the new carpet is in. I will install 5" trim over the splinters and over the edge of the carpet.

My current plan is to make the trim thick enough to hold bungs and to through bolt the trim to the bulkhead. However, 3/4"+ thick trim (iroko) may be too heavey. Any recommendations?
