340 Prop Cont'
Chris,With the new prop, I have had the engine up above 3,200 RPM and could go higher but have not for fuel economy reasons. There is not much increase in boat speed above 3,000 RPM but engine temp, noise and fuel use all go up. The sweet spot on my boat is around 2,800 - 2,900 RPM. My original Tachometer was checked by a local Yanmar tech and is not too far off. The prop gives me plenty of thrust and I am very happy with it - no vibration, no soot, good boat speed. I bought it directly from West by North (see link) after discussing it with them and giving them all of my boat, engine and transmission specs. This is the second Campbell prop I have had (on two boats) and I think that they may be very very slightly under pitched. However, going to the next pitch size would probably be too much. They perform very well and it would not be worth the trouble and expense of making the "perfect" pitch adjustment to the prop.
