hello, am considering moving up to a larger and used sailboat. Is moisture in the hull core a common issue for used boats. Would a surveyor be able to spot this if the boat had only been hauled out for a week. thanks

Common enough

My good old used sailboat is from '67 and is in pretty good shape on the hull although the deck is a little soft in a few spots. A good surveyor has a tool to check moisture content in the fiberglass. If there is water in the core/plywood it will still be there after a week.

above or below the wl?

A surveyor can identify moisture in a hull regardless of how long it has been hauled. There aren't many boats which have cored hulls below the wl and many (most)boats do have cored hulls above the wl. In the latter case, it is an uncommon problem.

The wood core is typically not in the hull but in the deck. My Pearson and Cal are solid fiberglass hull with a wood cored deck as is typical with most sail boats, although there are some wood cored hull boats out there.
