VC17

We sail in fresh water and use VC17. It lasts an entire season. In the Spring it just needs one fresh coat.

Work saved hopefully.

I have used vc17 for many years too, but coppercoat claims to last for many years (over 10 years) and that is a lot of work saved (i think.) Andreas

Everyone uses copper paint!

VC-17 is ok in fresh water but why use it when there are much better paints out there. VC-17 is for racers....

Coppercoat

Andreas~ I had never heard of Coppercoat until I went on their website today. It seems as if this product is mostly marketed and sold in Europe. With out every talking to someone who I know to get a real testomonial, I would be skeptical on their robust claims. If it works to half of their claims sounds like a good product. Here is the issue, Coppercoat cannot be simply applied over you're VC-17. You will have to remove all of you're old paint for proper adhesion. I personnally feel applying VC-17 is an easy task compared to other paints, but I'm appling it to only a twenty five footer. So how much work do you really want to through. Scraping, sanding, chemically stripping your existing bottom or just rolling on a coat of VC-17 yearly. Life is about picking your battles. If you go with Coppercoat, let us know how it goes.

Coppercoat

I have a pal who applied Coppercoat to his brand new 39' hull about 15 years ago. The instructions said that when the hull is cleaned (annually) the Coppercoat needs to be rubbed over with a 'Scotch' cloth to revive the surface and expose more copper particles. He did this for the first few years but now only power washes and leaves it at that. He gets no fouling problems or shell with the boat moored 365 in a river on south coast of England. At least no more than with conventional antifouling bottom paint so his work on the underwater parts of the hull is minimal. I realised that I have been antifouling a boat every year for the last 50 or so years, sometimes even scraping the old paint off and starting again. So, in 2005, I had Cuprotect applied to my H376. This product is similar to Coppercoat except that fine grained copper powder is blown onto a sticky coat of epoxy resin to provide a 100% cover with a (claimed) 25 year life. Since then my hull clean up has been the easiest I have known in 50 years and the fouling is not at all great at haul out time either. Little pollution too! PS:- These coatings MUST go on squeaky clean gel coat so a gentle slurry blast of the hull is necessary on any boat which has had bottom paint on it.

Coppercoat on new boat

My boat is new this year and completly clean, so new antifouling is something I can use for the first time. Coppercoat is fairly known in Europe and I am surprised that it is not on the market in the US. Perhaps under a different brand name? The point is: Epoxy with copper in it. VC17 is more or less the same, but must be applied at least every second year. The advantage to other atifoulings is that it dont build up layers. Interesting to read the posting from Donalex. Regards Andreas
