Coorect engine for my 1999 Mac

I have just purchased my first MacGregor, 1999, and it has a 25 HP merc on it. I will be using the Mac in the Mississippi where the current can range from average 3-4 mph to 8 mph during high water. Is it necessary for me to get a larger engine to run at 12 to 15 mph? If so what size is recommended?

Engine Size Suggestion

You will not be able to see 12-15 with 25 hp because that is not enough power to get the boat planing. You need at least 40 hp to plane so you might as well get 50 hp if you are going to upgrade anyway. I have 50 hp Honda 4-stroke and have seen 20 mph WOT with two people on board (11.75 X 10 propeller).

Hi, You might also consider the Merc 50 HP bigfoot with the prop designed for the mac. Gets up to 20 mph at times and is pretty quiet.
