Cooling Water Problems

I recently purchased Hunter 35 and have been making improvements. One problem is the raw cooling water plugging up and causing the engine to alarm and overheat. The sea strainer seems to plug easily (doing its job)as many as 3 times in a day. Also problems with sea grass plugging the thru-hull. This weekend I had to use a screw driver to unplug the thru-hull and force the material back out. My question: Is the solution to increase the size of the thru-hull, hose and strainer OR should I look to a exterior guard of some kind?

Check the elbow

There is an elbow just above the sea strainer that has a tendency to clog. Check that and also install some kind of barrier at the through hull, that should solve your problem.
